Gillian created the beginning of the episode to look like what she and David had decided: M&S were sleeping together. Then she ran out of time and didn't get to shoot the ending by herself, where she wasn't going to have it end with him getting up from her snuggle. But she ran out of time. So they wanted to make sure that we didn't HAVE to accept what happened.

I remember silveraspen did a very verbose detailed noromo explanation on the OBSSE list as to why she would be showering and dressing with the door open (to clear the fog from the mirror) and how they could have slept in the same bed with nothing happening. Ahhhh noromo panic.
