foods that begin with Q

Except it's songs that begin with B, today.

Baba, Alanis Morissette. Nobody knows poser white kids abroad like Alanis. I've seen them give their drugs up in place of makeshift altars / I've heard them chanting Kali, Kali frantically / I've heard them rudely repeat your teachings with egotism / I've seen them boasting robes and foreign sandalwood beads (for [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija for obvious reasons, and anyone else)

Banditos, The Refreshments, and the best advice ever for planning a heist in Mexico. When James and SNK get back to town, we're so there, and we've got the pistol, so we've got the pesos, and that seems fair! So give your ID card to the border guard / your alias says you're Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the United Federation of Planets / 'cause he won't speak English anyways.

Behind Closed Doors, Duende, Maria Woodford & Alex Radus. Maria wrote this one while she was living with us in Greenpoint. It's good for singing loud and proud and seeing what your voice can do. It's also just good. The whiskey didn't make me brave, it didn't make you call, it didn't make me right, it didn't say goodnight, and it didn't break my fall. (for [livejournal.com profile] channe and [livejournal.com profile] pene, and anyone else)

Being Cool, Kimya Dawson ([livejournal.com profile] kimya_dawson_) who needs no introduction around these parts, where there ain't nothing better than sitting with yer friends in Sidewalk singing songs. I'll be a great big ball of burning gas and I'll be sitting on my big fat ass / Sipping cristal light beside a plastic wading pool / And the next day I'll be somewhere else / part of me will hate myself /Part of me will know deep down that I am pretty cool / The part of me that knows I never cared for being cool

Belong, REM. Because Michael Stipe knew before the rest of us did that it was gonna be a bunch of party-line lemmings that bring about the apocalypse. Those creatures jumped the barricades and have headed for the sea/ She began to breathe, to breathe at the thought of such freedom / stood and whispered to her child: belong

Big Weenie, Eminem, Em doing what he does best, which is rhyming unrehearsed and making the rest of us look slow, and stupid. But I can bust one take without lookin' at no paper / It doesn't take a bunch of takes / Or me to stand here in this booth all day / For me to say the truth, ok? / You're droolin, you have tooth decay / Your mouth is open, you're disgusting / What the fuck you eat for lunch / A bunch of sweets or something, what? / You munch a bunch of Crunch 'N Munch? (for [livejournal.com profile] mazily and [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns, who probably already have it -- and anyone else)

Blood of Eden, Peter Gabriel w/Sinead O'Connor. (I DON'T HAVE THIS TRACK!, but if YOU DID, you could SHARE WITH US!) Maybe one of the best songs to come out of the 90s. This one plays when the EMP hits and the plane goes down in the desert, Claire and Sam hike across the sand, sharing the weight of the Cessna door she's handcuffed to. I can hear the distant thunder of a million unheard souls / Of a million unheard souls / Watch each one reach for creature comfort /For the filling of their holes. (thank you, [livejournal.com profile] nakedwesley!)

Breakin' The Rules, Robbie Robertson. This is the song that plays over Claire's 30th birthday in space, the end of UTEOTW, but it was left off the soundtrack, just like "Blood of Eden," but those of us who have been plagued for fifteen years by UTEOTW's rights problems are resourceful, still own VHSs, and can fend for ourselves. Grew up on the West Side / Never even been to the East Side / Don't know what they do with their lives over there (for [livejournal.com profile] eliade, who likes Robbie, and anyone else)

Bright Smile, Josh Ritter. Because I haven't spammed the internet with Josh Ritter enough, because I haven't yet had a music post w/out Mr. Ritter on, and because this song is super hot and sparkly. I’m looking for some peace but it’s so hard to find / with the Calamity Janes and the Steamboat Casanovas and Darling Clementines. (for [livejournal.com profile] fmangel with about 20 more tracks to follow. And anyone else!)

Your welcome! :o)

That is a cool song. Have you seen the video? I'll probably stop back tonight and grab a few of the other songs. I don't know most of them.

[identity profile] pene.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
oh sniff. one of my favourite of their songs ever. I was just singing it playing the blue guitaro about 20 minutes ago. but I can't do their plucky skill. plus I made up the chords from my memory. I haven't heard this song since I was there with you. so this is too much, to hear them again. sniff. oh the darling things. how beautiful was that time of life! so beautiful! it makes me happy!

also I love blood of eden despite thinking it problematical.

love you, far away girl.

x

[identity profile] pene.livejournal.com 2006-05-20 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
oh, I mean not problematical, just I don't know how to sing along because I don't know what it means.

[identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
I can't hear it without thinking about you! I mean, not for song-specific reasons but just! That time! In our big beds in Brooklyn! And sittign with our friends in Sidewalk singing songs! *sigh*

Love you back, kittenfish.

Please do not get arrested in Mexico until sometime after I make it out there for a visit. Thank you.

Also, there's a Mountain Goats reference in Dawson's "Lullaby for the Taken." I felt obligated to mention that so I could use this icon.

[identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Kimya knows all those guys. The Mountain Goats played at Sidewalk more than once, I bet.

"Behind Closed Doors" just made me cry for a reason I cannot articulate! Also, "while she was living with us"-- man, are you connected to EVERYONE in entertainment?

[identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com 2006-05-21 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
In this case (as in most cases) she was a stray musician and we had space in our apartment to house and shelter her. My kith and I tend to have apartments that become revolving youth hostels for the lost and sundry, and sometimes we pick up awesome celebrity gems like Maria and Alex.

I'll send you some more Duende music tomorrow. That song rocks so hard it kicks a lump into my throat. I said I'm not done yet / I need a little time / to get the night straight in my mind / to get to know these new regrets.

[identity profile] corianderstem.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Banditos! I love that song!

Meet me at the mission at midnight, we'll divvy up there! Whoo!

[points to right]

for [livejournal.com profile] eliade, who likes Robbie

[cough] She's not the only one.

(OK, maybe not solo Robbie quite so much, but still.)
