Curiousity made me follow the link. Not sure if you're the writer or not and I couldnt work out how to drop a comment on Vox blog...
I found the entry interesting, a bit bewildering too. But yeah, British tv- comedy in particular- has come out of the cosy and the whimsy and into some often really edgy/dark/weird territory, hurrah! If you/the author of the piece get a chance, see if you can find the following on the Net:
1.'Three Non-Blondes' three black women who do crazy things with/to unsuspecting members of the public.I'm a black woman and I was torn between shrieking at some of the sketches, hiding behind the sofa, and wetting myself with laughter. 2. 'Tittybangbang'- mostly female troup who do sketches that are in screamingly bad taste...brilliant (a fave character is the woman who has had too much cosmetic surgery and whose silicon is always seeping..visibly).There are running gags where some of the women play male perverts..convincingly. 3.'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps' erm, a sitcom about a group of young people.Rude, vulgar, great! 4.The Catherine Tate Show- female comedienne does sketches sometime going further than 'Little Britain'. See her schoolgirl character, Lauren for what some of the stroppiest London teens are like right now 5.'Nighty Night'- Ive yet to see this. Apparently its dark, sick, and brilliant sitcom written by a woman, who acts as main character in it. 6.'Surburban Shootout' (just finished) set in the village of Little Stempington its 'Desperate Housewives' on crack as these upper middle class women in a crime free village are all gangsters-unknown to their oblivious, smug menfolk.Mixing dinner parties and Uzzis, a racket pushing souped up eostrogen HRT patches bought from the French mafia, murderous protection rackets involving librarians...satire at its best.
They will have you reeling about the place stunned, and definately revising your view of dear old Blighty. They are some of the hot tv stuff right now- most have been nominated for awards- and seem to be all written by and starring women. :):)
Yeah, it's me, I blog under my real name at vox, but it's still me. And yes, I'm obviously open-handed and admitting there's so much about the BBC I don't know, and want to!
I'll try and track down everything you've listed here. I have series one of "Black Books" waiting to be started next, but of the above I've only ever seen Catherine Tate as her schoolgirl Lauren and some other clips, and have a download hookup for "Two Pints of Lager." Will need to forage the internet, etc, to try and find the rest.
What do you know about "Murder in Suburbia"? I have that waiting for me as well.
And, yeah, okay, the fact that these are all written by and starring women is just a giant added scoop of awesome. We have our share of female showrunners over here, it's not that it's so rare, it's just that what they/we've done in the last five years or so has been so...tame. Makes a pro blush!
How I Learned to Stop Worrying etc
