what if they threw a fandom and nobody came?

For those who have never seen "thirtysomething," are curious about "thirtysomething," or simply like polls, a poll:

Oh wow. WHY did this not come out on DVD, when all these other series did? BIG VALLEY did, for cryin' out loud.

I still have the soundtrack. *grin* Man, Nancy's cancer, and Michael and the takeover thing, and GARY....

Apparently there are very large and complex legal problems with the music used. They're supposed to be working on it.

That's weird -- I mean, I've had the soundtrack for ages. (And if there's ONE piece of music that just kinda sums up the late 80s/early 90s for me it's their theme song -- it's right up there with Northern Exposure for me. So many associations!)

[identity profile] krazykitkat.livejournal.com 2008-01-19 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Rights were only granted for the show on tv, and the occasional soundtrack. Those rights have to be renegotiated for dvd. The producers of Crossing Jordan are currently working through that very issue, they're hoping to release s1 sometime this year.

Some dvds are released with different music than the original broadcast. Northern Exposure and Scrubs are just two that have had that problem. Apparently some shows only have the rights to use certain songs in the original broadcast, so the music is different even when the show is repeated on tv.

It's apparently quite a complex area.

Ahhhhh. Man, yeah, it is complex. I hope they can do it -- it was a terrific series (even if at times I really just wanted to smack the snot out of Michael and Hope -- they got a bit whiny at times). Oh man, I just got a flash of that time Ellyn got an ulcer. ::blink:: And whatever happened to the actress who played Melissa. I really liked her.

This article (http://online.wsj.com/article/hollywood_report.html) has a rundown on where all the actors are now.

Maybe they need to relicense every piece of music that appears in the series? Don't you even need permission if someone just listens to something on the radio in a tv series? That could be a lot of music rights to clear. I guess their own title music might not be what causes trouble.

wrt the last question, I don't write fanfic, so I couldn't produce any fic. I'd read though.

Here via [livejournal.com profile] copracat. Just very recently I was waxing poetic about thirtysomething. Maybe because I was a teenager when I watched the show and they were all so OLD and now I'm 31 and totally them. Or maybe because Ken Olin guest starred on Brothers & Sister and seeing him on screen with Patricia Wettig was a crazy blast from the past.

Anyway, I don't write fic but I'd surely read fic and chat up a storm about the show. I'd love to rewatch it through more mature eyes.

Here via a friend. I'm constantly bemoaning the dearth of thirtysomething in my life. Did you check out the fic in Yuletide this year?

I look forward to whatever you decide to do with it.

I would LOVE to rewatch and pimp people in, but I'm not sure I see myself writing fic. Just not in a big writing phase, right now.

This fannish leech will lurk in whatever you do.

my answer would probably be "YES YES YES!!" to everything, if i could get them on dvd myself - or could convert the episodes to dvd. because i get more pleasure watching things on my tv instead of on my computer, and i have a tendency not to watch the things i've downloading.

(see all of heroes, and the fact i waited for FNL to come out on DVD before watching.)

i'm spoiled, i know.

Once I finish converting all the eps to AVI, I will MAIL you the book of DVDs I have. You, in exchange, must promise to WATCH 'em.

I have no idea how I ended up here. Oh wait, yes, I do. I put thirtysomething into the interest thingie, and voilã. Here I am. I joined the community but I think I need to re-watch some of the show to write anything. My brain needs visuals. Maybe I can dig out the old VCR tapes. Thanks for creating it. Without the DVDs to generate interest I think it will be slow to build. (; Now I want a thirtysomething icon. I will have wait for the DVDs for that too, I bet. I thought I was the only person who remembered this series.
