Even this, I think, would only give you an idea of how big fandom is on LJ - I tend to think that there are a LOT of other fans out there, but that LJ is the best organized and the most easily accessible. At the same time, it usually isn't the place for complete and utter newbies, because I don't believe it's usually the type of place that's first thing that comes up on a Google search, for example - mainly because LJers don't have that much control over their meta tags.
