she was a friend of mine
Oct. 16th, 2006 04:22 pmSomeone (
cosmic) was asking for LJ recs. Here, meet some friends of mine that should be friends of yours.
general_jinjur: Adventurous, crafty midwestern marathon runner, learning about fandom from the outside in. Funny and brilliant and loves David Hewlett and loves fans and the internets and LJ and posts frequently to discuss matters of great import (some of which are fruits, some of which are shoes, some of which are other unsuspecting souls) often backed up by her thoroughly good sport of a husband who is similarly funny and brilliant. Wrote the commentary on
samdonne's Cowboy Days, thus creating one of my favorite fannish interactions between two people I know and love who heretofore had not known one another. (And while we're at it, N, meet A, A, meet N.)
boxmint: Found, quite independently of me and/or g_j above, Shrift and Nestra's Polyamorous Recs, and was thereafter missing from the world for several weeks, only to emerge emaciated, dirty, and full of fiction. This one went to high school and college with me, also went to high school with
coffeeandink, and I swear to you, if Mely and I are not, together, sufficient cred on a bitch, then I don't wanna know what it takes to make it on the internet. Boxmint is a genius, corporate and creative and largely nonfannish, and is the girl Mike Doughty was talking about when he's tossing her sales-and-marketing blouse over the chairback, only in those situations it's Boxmint picking up random marketing chicks and having her way with them up in the balconies. Um, New Yorker, asks good questions, asks lots of questions, will fall in love with you if you are a brilliant and attractive powerhouse of a woman. (Adjunct:
kengwen. Also went to high school w/me an' Boxmint, also asks good questions, new to LJ and just learning how marvelous this place can be, so more friends and more comments would only show her.)
sloganeer: Sometimes I forget that not everyone knows Canada Jess. Everyone, this is Canada Jess, genius spin doctor from Canada. See her for short and chilling original fiction snippets, glorious Sorkinfic, sitcoms, Beecher & Keller, space shows, and everything that was ever good and wondrous from the great white north. (That's Canada.) Jess also has better taste in music than you, and knows how to share. I've had this one friended since back when she was
dammitcarl , known to the world as Joey's hand twin. Dammit Carl!
projectjulie: The de-facto queen of cyborgasmia and owner of the world's largest and pinkest pair of femslash goggles. Julie is a true-to-life academe, teaching porn and spectatorship and fanlust over at
scopophilia,
cyborganize, and Brown University. See this girl for everything from sex play to semiotics, and, if nothing else, hop on board her BSG vlog: viral marketing and cyborgasmia as it was meant to be. If you're watching BSG you've got no excuse to miss this vlog, and if you like fandom, sex, or academia, there is really no excuse not to glom on to everything Julie does. Um, in the world. Also she is my space girlfriend, or my real girlfriend, or my Internet girlfriend, or the love of my life, it's hard to make these kinds of distinctions here in world 2.0, but this is Julie and I love her.

But, you ask, what if I want a new LJ friend who is awesome and entertaining and makes art? Well then, I tell you, observe!
fan_this: Brains behind
isaymckay, among other things, and also mama of the icon where John points a kitten at you and the one where he is Prince of Atlantis riding a unicorn. That there is how clever fan_this is, AND, she is the sort of friend one does not have to regulate to one's art filter, because she is also smart and funny and full of gossip, fantasy and lust. Makes any flist better!
siriaeve: My current favorite fanartist, but my allegiances sway with the wind. That, however, does not make Siria any less talented, or clever, or interesting. And the icons, man, and the art, and the fic! Sometimes people are just, um, really talented, and then I hide under my desk.
cincodemaygirl: Similarly talented, similarly entertaining, similarly a star on any flist. Am always so happy when she posts, art or fic or ep reviews or random squeeing in Hewlett's general direction. ALSO her love for Paul Simon goes to eleven, and that is always okay by me.

Iffen you didn't make any new friends after this post, it's your fault, not mine. *g* I gotta go to the shrink now. Please, if you're moved to, rec me your friends, in comments. I'm feeling frisky today.

Date: 2006-10-17 02:06 am (UTC)Cool non-meme, iamsab. I'll have to look at your flist and see what brilliant people I know whom you might be missing (though with Julie our fannish connections seem to have come full circle :-)]

Date: 2006-10-17 02:28 am (UTC)Man, I feel SPECIALLY PRETTY NOW. But, I must make a wee correction. I did not make my icon,
no subject
Date: 2006-10-17 03:07 am (UTC)though now i feel extra bummed about my recent dearth of posting time.
all-purpose recommendations:
vance writes hilarious teen novels, all of which i have read and enjoyed, and very funny chick lit style adult novels, only two of which i have read. so far. he always writes interesting posts.
hezziwig is a latin teacher currently teaching herself japanese. she already knows sanskrit. she's recently married a medievalist (also on lj,
jeremy makes art and loves dinosaurs. once upon a time (pre-firefly days), she and i were the only lj users sharing 'plastic dinosaurs' as an interest. her posts are always good reads, and her photos are good too, and she looks great in a tie. plus: minicomics.
jinty works for oxford university press, travels a lot, and loves, as you might have guessed, jinty comics. actually she has a lot to say about comics in general. she once sent me a che guevara bikini from brazil, she is just that cool.
mark posts surreal stream of consciousness, heavy on the fringes of pop culture. there's no real good way to describe him, he's like nothing else. he works in a library and writes the comic book dorothy of oz.
i am not very good at writing endorsements of lj users, apparently.
totally a sidebar: i use capitalization for work and school, all lower case for lj and emails to friends - it's how i remember not to swear at my boss in print. and to not say 'dude' in allstaff emails.

Date: 2006-10-17 02:29 pm (UTC)I mean, once you've flipped the little brain-switch, it's flipped, so your reason sounds rather unreasonable to me.
But on any event, it's your choice to do as you like, just as it's my choice to avoid the writing of people who don't use standard capitalization. And people who can't pronounce "nuclear." And people who use LOL and <3 as punctuation.

Date: 2006-10-17 03:39 pm (UTC)i certainly understand your reasoning. i wouldn't consider reading someone who posted in comis sans, or, for that matter, who used LOL as punctuation. i work with a woman who capitalizes words she Thinks are Important in sentences, and that puts me in a killing rage, so i sympathize.
i'm sorry you find it jarring, it certainly isn't intended as such.

Date: 2006-10-19 04:37 am (UTC)only now I am having an attack of insecurity about my lack of capital letters! I thought I couldn't use capitals if I wanted to be cool!
it's
I'm watching NCIS right now, and after I finish it I might go back for Bones, because I need a procedural in my life.
oh, what else was I going to tell you? everything.
