So I wanted to go to the free clinic, either the one on Sunset or the one on Beverly, but the one on Sunset only takes appointments M/W/F between 10-12. Which is not a lot of hours. I can't blame them, they're a good public service, they're free, and I don't have insurance, but it didn't help yesterday at 11 am when I was miserably illin', and it didn't help today at 2 pm when I hurt too much to move. And then the one on Beverly was all booked, though I'll tell ya I entertained the thought of making a dentist appointment and then saying, "hey, while you're in my mouth..."

Because it turns out I have strep. Which they told me at the not-free clinic where I ended up getting a throat culture, a CBC, a full exam, and then a shot in the posterior and a bottle of Amoxycillin to go. $180 dollars later, I have strep. What am I, five?

So MW came over and brought me a Robek's juice and we watched Dr. Zhivago and he mopped my poor sweaty brow. It seems I had strep last week without realizing it, and then it went away, and now it's back with a vengeance and it hurts to move or swallow or think.

On the other hand, last night, while tossing and turning in my cold sweatiness and sore throatiness, I did write the first three paragraphs on my Riding Shotgun thingie, AKA Clark And Lex Go To Utah. I'm not sure why I picked Utah. I blame the strep. But right now I'm working on which of Clark and Lex is the better driver, and I think Clark might be winning. Though having Lex bad at anything seems counter-intuitive. Still, Clark seems frustrated at Lex's casual-yet-white-knuckled manner of whipping around hairpin turns in the dark, and I think Lex doesn't want to admit he'd rather Clark drive so he could sleep and not stress.

So I'll sleep if I can or else I'll poke at Lex and see if he can manage to fuck up enough to get Clark to drive, or if they're both tired, I think perhaps a nice motel is in order. It's up to them.

I still like The Lateral Thinking Puzzles Forum, and you would too. Also, Everwood premiere next week, hooray!

Everything hurts, mostly my throat, eating tea with jam, perhaps some more soup?

Also, this book I'm reading, Maureen McHugh's Mission Child, is awfully good. Like what Clan of the Cave Bear would have been if Clan of the Cave Bear were set on another planet far in the future. And good.

You're sick. That's terrible. And Expensive. With a capital E! Let me back up and put some more letters in "terrible." There. Two R's, right, not two B's? Teribble. Oh, yes. Definitely.

Lex is good at driving very fast. Well, 50/50 record there. He did run into Clark and drive off a bridge. But he also managed to NOT run over Clark the day Clark was taking a little nap in the middle of the road in the dark. So that's up to you. I'm betting Clark is a very responsible driver. Two hands on the wheel, five miles under the speed limit at all times. Which would of course prompt Lex to say, "Clark, Ferraris were not meant to be driven at thirty miles an hour."

Right, but see, they're in the mountains and rocks of Utah in the middle of the night. And I feel like Clark would be the more responsible driver whereas Lex might accidentally kill them. AND, I think Lex might actually be a little SCARED driving around in the hills, especially in the mammoth SUV Lex made them rent for the trip. Certainly CLARK is scared with Lex at the wheel.

But you'll appreciate where my problem comes in when you understand that I'm trying to do this in 3rd O! So everybody's scared or nobody's scared but certainly someone wishes someone else were driving. Most likely me.

So the question is: who would be the more capable driver at night in the scary narrow hills and cliffs? And I feel like it's Clark. But does LEX realize it's Clark?

Because I have STREP! It IS terrible. Like a tribble. Oh, I wish I had some Star Treks on tape.

3pO! How did that happen? Why did that happen? That's terrible.

I think Clark knows Clark is the better driver here. I think Lex may pretend he doesn't want to be seen driving an SUV and so makes Clark drive, if Lex is scared. If Lex is not scared...

Okay, here's what you're going to do. You decide what happens, and then inform Clark and Lex. This is not one of those situations where you can let them decide for themselves. I blame the 3pO.

Let Clark drive. Make Clark demand to drive out of his own sheer terror, or concern for Lex's sleepiness, or as a favor so Lex can sleep or tell amusing stories about the ancient Romans. Wouldn't Lex be cute all happy and sleep-deprived?

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get Lex's shoes off.
