Yesterday I learned some things. They mostly have to do with the fact that Methos is so incredibly foxy! and wears red pants! and looks like Adrien Brody! and doesn't show up too much, as it turns out, in Season 3. But anyway, I saw my first three Highlander episodes ever (um, thanks, [livejournal.com profile] _maayan) and mostly what I know is that Methos is ADORABLE and Duncan's lower jaw is either too large or too small for the rest of his head.

Also, some unpopular fannish opinions:

  • 1. I have no problem with RPS. Particularly Nsync. I don't write it myself but lots of good people do and they like to squee over their shiny boys and that's just fine by me. I have no legal/moral/ethical problems with this. And some of the crazy AUs are really excellent.
As an interesting aside, note how many people have listed the fact that they can't deal with/are weirded out by RPS on their Unpopular Fannish Opinions dossiers. Makes you wonder which of the opinions is the unpopular one, don't it? Then again, to each her own, and so forth.

  • 2. I'm not wild about teen dramas. Movies in particular. Unless they're possessed by aliens or imbued with powers of some sort or are played by Leelee Sobieski, I really can't get it up for the neo-John Hughes high-school teen angst genre. I'll confess, I couldn't get it up when it was John Hughes, in the 80s, either.

  • 3. I think Starship Troopers is one of the finest films of the last 20 years.

  • 4. I don't like boys with long hair! Rather, I'm not wild about the long hair. On the boys. This includes, but is not limited to, Marcus (B5), Byron (B5), Duncan (Highlander), Aidan (Sex and the City) or Chris (Northern Exposure) or any John Corbett pre-haircut, Legolas (LOTR), or, you know, any sort of random one-off Interview with the Vampire, Pirates of the Caribbean sort of sultry longhaired rogue in a cape. It is time for them to give up the Fabio, cut their hair, and move into the 21st century with the rest of us.

  • 5. I like humanizing villains, or, at the very least, giving credence to their points of view. QED, someone like CSM, or Scorpius, or Lionel Luthor (ETA: Or Gul Dukat, my favorite misunderstood hero of all.). In each of their worlds, as far as they're concerned, they're right. They are the heroes of their own stories. In their POV, it's the whiny pansy-ass heroes who are the enemy, the stumbling block, the nuisance, the ones who Just Don't Understand. And these guys, these sad old hero-villains have feelings too.

  • 6. Backing up to #1. I am proud of almost anything fans do. I may not agree with the inspiration behind it, I may not read/write/participate in it, but in the battle between the Fannishly Inclined and the Real World, I'll always come down on the fannish side. See also [livejournal.com profile] alara_r's "First They Came For The Hackers..." credo. So, dude, whatever, write your Band of Brothers/Elijah Wood LOTRIPS/Chris Carter/Anne Rice copyright violating underage slash whatever, and I'll certainly avoid it a whole lot and also probably hide, but I will defend your right to do it.

  • 7. And despite the quite possible unpopularity of all the rest of these, this one's the one that makes me duck and await the tomatoes: I don't see the SLASH in M*A*S*H! I wish I did. I'd love to slash that show. But Hawkeye LOVES WOMEN. They are soft and they smell nice and they are curvy and he LOVES THEM. I just can't see a man doin' that for him. Don' hit me!

  • 8. I don't really care about British history. Or British literature. Or anything sort of vaguely poncy and Victorian. This is, of course, why I ended up being Gone With the Wind yesterday, but, you know, whatever. See also above: Legolas, long-haired vampires and anything fancy that comes in a cape.

  • 9. Draco? Not that smart. In fact, I think canon's led us to believe that he's only an average student, and pretty damned stupid when it comes to intuition or deductive reasoning. He's mostly just a bigoted thug who hangs out with two other bigoted thugs, and he's only smart in comparison to Crabbe and Goyle. On the other hand. He is seductive, powerful, and a sexy little tow-headed spitfire. So he's okay by me.

  • 10. I am still working on item #10.

That might be everything I know. Also, my ears have still not popped. Still with the pumpkin on my head.

I have to get back to work now. Have a lovely day.

Absolutely! Is it still snowing up there? If so, I'm on my way.

Sigh. Alas, no. We're back to rain. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be.

(Though I've never seen Starship Troopers. So.)

Not only is this list bulleted, but it's *numbered* as well. That's some high level organization.

The mere fact you used "film" in the same sentence as "Starship Troopers" means you win the "10 Unpopular Fannish Opinions" meme.

In response to something you said earlier, Methos is very sexy, and yes, there's something wrong with Duncan's face around the jaw area. He looks like his chin is getting sucked into a black hole. How's that for an unpopular opinion?

See. It's true. I wonder if we can extract Methos and put him with someone more deserving? Like Lex maybe? Or Lennier? Or Ephram? Methos/Ephram slash would truly be breaking new ground.

I'm laughing now. Very hard. Torch wrote that Methos/Mulder thing that was totally hot. I won't find the link for you because I'm laaaaaazy.

Love,

I am also not looking it up now because I'm lazy too, but I'll find it at torch's site later.

Now, I am reading SuperColliderClark, so stand by.

Oooh, you're using kryptonite Lex. I'm trying to fix a sentence in SCC, but I'm clearly in the wrong window. Let me focus.

I am using him! I couldn't resist his t-shirt with his name on. You should use him too. Did I send you the flat version as well as the animated one?

You sent them both! And I love his t-shirt, but I'm in denial right now (see icon). Serious intensive denial. Hopefully I can upload Lex later once I'm done with that.

I'm frightened. [livejournal.com profile] _maayan and I taped last night's SV so I'll watch it tonight and then I might have to raid your Denial icons myself. Are they still somewhere?

They're here: denial.

But I have no idea which are unclaimed so I made you a Clark and a Lex all for you, which I will send to your home address. The Lex is probably too pretty for you. You'll probably like the Clark better. He's edgy.

To reiterate: I can't talk about that ep right now. Find me again in three weeks, I may be more functional then.

I'm *so* not writing! MUST FOCUS.

Yeah, I can't remember which one I claimed, and I *think* I claimed one before you posted these so it wouldn't be...but who cares! Because you made one just for me! Excellent.

I'm still reading SCC and it's still in second person and I'm still goggling over that. I will e-mail you on that shortly.

I wish now I'd seen a single episode of Highlander, rather than dimissing it as that weird show with the swords and the guy with long hair and a lantern jaw.

Date: 2003-11-20 04:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com
Don't worry about the jaw guy! Seriously, it's all about Methos and his red pants and ascetic profile and snarky 5000 year old humor. He was one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, dude. And probably also Santa Claus. Mmmmm, Methos.

Also, first it was just bulleted, but then I realized I couldn't count to ten all by myself, so I had to add the numbers. Hence the fact that there's only nine of these.

I should have just stuck with the bullets, is what.

As someone who loves (good) M*A*S*H slash, I can say that I still see no reason to hit you. I don't feel threatened by your opinion on that count. I mean, heck, I don't think I see the Jack/Daniel in Stargate SG-1, and that's probably far more unpopular than not seeing the slash in M*A*S*H. People who live in glass houses, and all.

Starship Troopers! Excellent. You'll have to come over one of these days and we'll have a little Neil Patrick Harris Paul Verhoeven fest. Have you seen the DVD bonus materials? Both documentaries? You must.

I see slash in M*A*S*H*. Well, not slash really. More like I sit there watching it desperately wanting to slash Radar with someone and not coming up with anyone. It is quite sad.

And I love Starship Troopers.

Of course, I also like Waterworld and the Lost in Space film, so... take that as you will.

Radar! Hmm. Radar/Father Mulcahy? Radar/Colonel Blake? Radar/Colonel FLAGG?

You're right; the possibilities really *are* limited. I suppose Radar/Klinger would be the obvious choice, but, dude. Hello. No.

Now I need to bleach my brain a little. I'll be back.
