This here, is a BAD APPLE.

And I hate to say it, because it'll come back at me in a jinx, words have meaning and names have power, but this computer, this Mac Power PC G4 I've been using since this summer, this computer BITES HARD.

I say this because I've lost the ability to do things a normal person should be able to do. Like "find in page" and ctrl-click-save. I used to be able to do these things. Also I can't have anything open at the same time as AIM lest I get hideous type lag in both programs and end up spouting garbled text that not even the intrepid Punk M. can decipher.

I used a Mac all through college. I have all sorts of respect for the machine, for the underdog, for folks who use and love the thing. I just. Personally. Hate them. Especially this one. I hate it.

Got a laptop off eBay. It's an ugly bugger, a big clunky IBM Thinkpad workhorse named Lennier, who's en route to my place as we speak where he will serve me well. He cost $440 and he comes without system software, but he's got a DVD drive so I can watch the Jeremiah episodes Killa sent me, he's got an 800mhz processor (light speed compared to thsi 450mhz lobstrosity), a 20GB hard drive and! most importantly! He'll allow me to palaver with the rest of this Bill-Gates-imbued world, downloading and bit torrenting and suprnova-ing and playing Alpha Centauri.

Curse me if you will, tell me how what I could have done to make this Mac work for me (and actually, if you know how to solve this right-click-save problem I'd love to hear it -- not being able to pinch caps off the 'net is seriously curtailing my icon-making) but at the end of the day, I want a PC again. I do!

This Mac cut me off, most recently, in the middle of a brilliant and highly insightful post about Ambassador Londo Mollari. I'll try to duplicate it here again, but I don't promise the same level of unabashed brilliance of the previous draft.

While I'm working on that, here's a Babylon 5 thought to chew on:

During the Garibaldi/Sheridan rift, after Garibaldi's sleeper personality was activated but before he goes on the lam to Mars, Sheridan and Garibaldi have a fight in the middle of a public square. Garibaldi huffs something about Sheridan's god complex -- Sheridan's mad Garibaldi sold him out during the ISN interview.

Later, Sheridan comes back to try to apologize, but just as he's getting the words out a female alien rushes inopportunely over to his side goggling "you're him! You're Sheridan! You died and came back to life!" doing very little to dissuade Garibaldi of the idea of Sheridan's messiah complex.

Must have seen that scene a dozen times as I've watched and rewatched B5, but last night was the first time I noticed -- the genuflecting woman's wearing BLACK GLOVES. Now, she's an alien, but, you know, isn't it possible the Psi Corps SENT HER to spur Garibaldi's hatred in just that way?

Anyway, it was a big Eureka! for me.

Next, failing Macintoshian interference, a post about Londo Mollari, tormented victim of the Interstellar Alliance. All net, all channels.

Tech support is a hard habit to break...

You should just be able to drag images from the browser to the desktop or a finder window, but given that ctrl click isn't working, that may not work either.

I get the typing lag thing from time to time, but usually only in save dialogs. What OS version are you on? Is it only with AOL IM? Is normal mouse-clicking slow? This is generally a CPU usage problem-- something hogging the cycles so badly that apps can't respond to keystrokes. If you haven't already, running Process Viewer or Activity Monitor might tell you something... at least until your PC arrives. :)

Yeah, dragging to the desktop doesn't work. I also can't download in any capacity.

Yeah, the type lag usually occurs when I'm running something big, but, for example, if I try to open Word while AIM is open I get type lag, then if I quit everything else I still have type lag till I reboot. It's terribly horribly laggy, and normal mouse-clicking is slow.

I'm on OS 9.2. Help?

(I don't know what Process Viewer is.)

sorry, didn't see you were back. I found a really comprehensive page on this:

http://archives.mac-mgrs.org/archive/2003/20030117234831.txt

It sounds very much like the problem you describe, with possible causes and fixes listed. There's not much explanation on the page itself but the links usually have the solutions in more detail.
