Yes. YES. Because my parents tried it both ways with my sister (well, my dad tried it the first way and my mom tried it the second) and it's only the second that works. I mean, she's still alive and she's still in our lives. Even if she's not living it the way they'd like her too. And that's the rub: there are people (the same people shouting loud and hateful things to the couples waiting in line to get their marriage licenses not five blocks from my work) who can't deal with that idea.
