You'd think. But she's an outdoor cat and I just can't bring myself to do it. And more directly, we have windows with bars on and no screens, and it's too damned hot to close them.
Plus, Hawkeye would kill me. "Why are you punishing me?" he'd ask. "I just go outside to sit quietly under the neighbor's car! I didn't even eat that lizard tail when Edith left it for me!"
Edith. Though Eliza can stay inside too. Eliza is trouble and will just get knocked up.
And yeah. Cats live years and years longer on average if they're kept indoors. (Dr. Harry, the tv vet, told me this so it must be true.) No cat diseases (though Ed already has some of those) and no cars and no other cats or dogs or coyotes helps. Ed loves you and Hawkeye and you are both home.
Or if you only want to save the birds and not Edith then the bell. But C is righter than my original suggestion.
But Furby! ANd the windows! And the screaming she'd scream if all of a sudden we locked her in. She's a screamer, Ed is. You wouldn't recognize her if you saw her today. She's turned into a CRAZY PSYCHOTIC BEASTWOMAN.
On the other hand, I want her to live years longer. Furby too. So, perhaps I was hasty.
They'll get over it. And anyway, tis better than being eaten by a dog or getting fleas or heartworm or being run over by a car. All three of our cats are indoor kitties (because the cat we had before them was squished by a car right in front of our house SNIFF). And the funny thing, they were all born on the street, abandoned at a young age, etc. But, they've learned to deal with staying inside. Plus, open windows (with screens, of course) are their friends. It's a big thing when I open a window for 'em, because it's like, "YAY! Disneyland!"
But, yeah, they'll get over it if you lock 'em in. And in the long run, they may even learn to love you for it.
