For reasons which deserve explication but which won't get it as I'm one foot out the door, the Jetta is still my car! But is at the mechanic's at the moment to the tune of five hundred bucks (see also, "transmission, removal of," "oil leak, slow" and "starter, extremely crappy") so I'm hightailing it down there to work out a sort of payment plan.

Exactly one freelance job and one very, very considerate loan have made my survival to date possible, there's also a frightening night job writing subtitles in my future: more on that story as it unfolds. For now:

I dreamed I went into Manhattan for a Magnolia cupcake. Halfway across town in the middle of the night I came across a The Limited with a "help wanted" sign in the window, went in, applied for a job. They took me right then and there, and I went to work examining shelves of poorly-made clothing named after Ikea furniture models. At one point I asked one of my co-workers what time my shift ended. "2 am," she told me, sadly. And Magnolia closed at midnight. No cupcake for me!
