Yesterday I learned some things. They mostly have to do with the fact that Methos is so incredibly foxy! and wears red pants! and looks like Adrien Brody! and doesn't show up too much, as it turns out, in Season 3. But anyway, I saw my first three Highlander episodes ever (um, thanks, [livejournal.com profile] _maayan) and mostly what I know is that Methos is ADORABLE and Duncan's lower jaw is either too large or too small for the rest of his head.

Also, some unpopular fannish opinions:

  • 1. I have no problem with RPS. Particularly Nsync. I don't write it myself but lots of good people do and they like to squee over their shiny boys and that's just fine by me. I have no legal/moral/ethical problems with this. And some of the crazy AUs are really excellent.
As an interesting aside, note how many people have listed the fact that they can't deal with/are weirded out by RPS on their Unpopular Fannish Opinions dossiers. Makes you wonder which of the opinions is the unpopular one, don't it? Then again, to each her own, and so forth.

  • 2. I'm not wild about teen dramas. Movies in particular. Unless they're possessed by aliens or imbued with powers of some sort or are played by Leelee Sobieski, I really can't get it up for the neo-John Hughes high-school teen angst genre. I'll confess, I couldn't get it up when it was John Hughes, in the 80s, either.

  • 3. I think Starship Troopers is one of the finest films of the last 20 years.

  • 4. I don't like boys with long hair! Rather, I'm not wild about the long hair. On the boys. This includes, but is not limited to, Marcus (B5), Byron (B5), Duncan (Highlander), Aidan (Sex and the City) or Chris (Northern Exposure) or any John Corbett pre-haircut, Legolas (LOTR), or, you know, any sort of random one-off Interview with the Vampire, Pirates of the Caribbean sort of sultry longhaired rogue in a cape. It is time for them to give up the Fabio, cut their hair, and move into the 21st century with the rest of us.

  • 5. I like humanizing villains, or, at the very least, giving credence to their points of view. QED, someone like CSM, or Scorpius, or Lionel Luthor (ETA: Or Gul Dukat, my favorite misunderstood hero of all.). In each of their worlds, as far as they're concerned, they're right. They are the heroes of their own stories. In their POV, it's the whiny pansy-ass heroes who are the enemy, the stumbling block, the nuisance, the ones who Just Don't Understand. And these guys, these sad old hero-villains have feelings too.

  • 6. Backing up to #1. I am proud of almost anything fans do. I may not agree with the inspiration behind it, I may not read/write/participate in it, but in the battle between the Fannishly Inclined and the Real World, I'll always come down on the fannish side. See also [livejournal.com profile] alara_r's "First They Came For The Hackers..." credo. So, dude, whatever, write your Band of Brothers/Elijah Wood LOTRIPS/Chris Carter/Anne Rice copyright violating underage slash whatever, and I'll certainly avoid it a whole lot and also probably hide, but I will defend your right to do it.

  • 7. And despite the quite possible unpopularity of all the rest of these, this one's the one that makes me duck and await the tomatoes: I don't see the SLASH in M*A*S*H! I wish I did. I'd love to slash that show. But Hawkeye LOVES WOMEN. They are soft and they smell nice and they are curvy and he LOVES THEM. I just can't see a man doin' that for him. Don' hit me!

  • 8. I don't really care about British history. Or British literature. Or anything sort of vaguely poncy and Victorian. This is, of course, why I ended up being Gone With the Wind yesterday, but, you know, whatever. See also above: Legolas, long-haired vampires and anything fancy that comes in a cape.

  • 9. Draco? Not that smart. In fact, I think canon's led us to believe that he's only an average student, and pretty damned stupid when it comes to intuition or deductive reasoning. He's mostly just a bigoted thug who hangs out with two other bigoted thugs, and he's only smart in comparison to Crabbe and Goyle. On the other hand. He is seductive, powerful, and a sexy little tow-headed spitfire. So he's okay by me.

  • 10. I am still working on item #10.

That might be everything I know. Also, my ears have still not popped. Still with the pumpkin on my head.

I have to get back to work now. Have a lovely day.
