If there is at least one person in your life whom you consider a close friend, and whom you would not have met without being part of an online fandom, post this sentence in your journal.

That's a meme, apparently. I'm more curious if there's anyone out there for whom this isn't true. 'Fess up. Me, meanwhile, I owe everything I am to fandom. [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun and [livejournal.com profile] wearemany and [livejournal.com profile] pene and [livejournal.com profile] _maayan, I can't, I mean, it's like weird twisty time travel to try and imagine my life without them. Without all of you, really, all you YV and Mango people and Farscape people and Babylon 5 people and readers and writers and people who draw stuff... This is who I am. I mean, this is who we are. I love you so much.

Closer broke me the fuck up. There is, I said to [livejournal.com profile] _maayan, who was rubbing my back as we left the theatre, me all teary and snotty, exactly one (1) type of movie that makes me cry, and that's the one. It is, I said to [livejournal.com profile] wearemany over too much filet mignon chili, that dazzler of a girl, that Scarlett-Johanneson-in-Lost-in-Translation cum Kate Winslet "I am not a concept" type of pinkhaired girl that I relate to, that girl who invariably leaves ("I'm the one who leaves!") visibly unscathed, because all she was was what they wanted her to be, what they needed her to be, for them. A magic-realism pixie-ish Mary Poppins, stuck around till the wind changes, her own needs irrelevant, forgotten, not part of the narrative. Just lurking there, because she's independent enough not to share them, or because she doesn't need to, and, anyway, it was, at the risk of avoiding spoilers, that shot of her passport that set me off. As far as true blue reviewing goes: Mike Nichols knows what to do with a play, knows what to do with humans, and liars, and people. As a player/human/liar myself, I'll tell you this one was spot on, and the best movie I've seen since LiT did the same thing to me last year.

Meanwhile, I have nothing to say about House of Flying Daggers. No, wait. That's a lie. Zhang Ziyi, also known as Ziyi Zhang, is dangerously, preternaturally, attack-me-with-ly-adverbs-why-doncha, ridiculously beautiful. I thought the movie was unimpressive, overlong and totally unsympathetic. In smaller words, who the fuck CARES? But I liked the bamboo.

I bought H:LOTS Season 4 on DVD, because the paycheck from MInc arrived and I couldn't resist. I am a sucker for Mike Kellerman, mainly a sucker for the cast arrangement in S4 and S5, with yer Lewis/Kellermans on one hand and yer Bayliss/Pembletons on the other, and Sergeant Kay lighting the way. I sped through it and sold it back to Amoeba so's I could cash in on S5, and I'm two discs in and happy as clams. If I can scrape together the money, I fully plan to keep this boxed set (Luther Mahoney! Julianna Cox! Bayliss takes a bullet for Frank! Kellerman sinks into a deep blue funk!) as part of my permanent exhibit, up there next to M*A*S*H seasons 4 and 5 and my special edition of The Abyss.

I'm rec'ing Star Trek this month on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van; color me as surprised as the next girl.
