My internal DVD driver just stopped working, kaput, in the middle of the day yesterday. Leaving me high and dry in Madcow Cluster, cut off from light and life and hope.

The device manager claims the device is working properly. The latest driver is installed. The device SPINS. I cleaned my registry. I uninstalled and reinstalled my Secondary IDE, though I think that's where I'm losing control of my senses --

Bottom line: the DVD player does not play DVDs. Which is, you know, one of my favorite features of this device, moreso now since the Great LA Rainstorm of Ought-Five wiped out my actual, um, free-standing DVD player.

You put a DVD in this drive, you launch PowerDVD or whathaveyou, and the thingy says: "no disc in drive d:"

Please, please, PLEASE help me? PLEASE? I'm on AIM as anoniongirl, a flailing, desperate onion girl.

ETA: Great minds have conspired and consulted to provide me the following diagnostic: my drive is broken.

So, someday, I need to get another internal DVD-ROM drive for a laptop. Preliminary research indicates that buying internal peripherals for laptops is not as easy as you'd hope.

And, yes, G! The rain that rained in my house thoroughly soak-ed and demolish-ed our DVD player. *sniff*

OK, quick troubleshooting.

Will the dvd player play cds? As in, when you put cds into the drive, can you play them on another application? What OS are you using? Do you have other programs that can play dvds? Windows Media Player should be able to access the data on the drive. What does My Computer say about it?

I have a copy of WinDVD I can send you, to troubleshoot using another application, but I have to locate it, so it might take a bit.

You can also download WinDVD from their site - free 14 day trial. And if you are really tricky you can clean it off your drive and download it every 14 days ;)

Mucho sympathy on the DVD player, my laptop has been away at the HP hospital for two freaking weeks now.

On a gleeful note YAY the rain is finally over!! The carpet steaming dudes came today, sucked up the flood and announced that they didn't think the black mold on my walls was THE killer black mold.

Although my eyes feel kinda loose. Hmmmm....

PS... am not sure where in LA you are - but down by my work (in Torrance) there's a PC store with an incredibly sweet putergeek boy who took a long look at my laptop before I shipped it out(and agreed that my fan was broken and it was going to blow up soon). I know it is probably a hike - it is for me, am up in Venice - but he did mutter those magical words:

"Charge you? Oh, am not going to charge you, I've never charged anyone for trying to fix their PC before."

I can't think of the freakin' name of the place off hand - it's on Hawthorne about a mile north of Del Amo. Give a wave if you want me to stake it out next time I am down there. Might be a lot cheaper than having to replace it.
