I couldn't sleep, so I read
yuletide stories for several hours, and I would just like to thank the goddamned ACADEMY. Dude.
I wasn't expecting this at all; in fact, I'd even forgotten I requested it. But, person, you could not have done better; this story filled a VOID in my SOUL I didn't even know I HAD. And so, first, for MEEEE:
Even Later, Into the Woods. I requested Baker/Baker's Wife, but this is something even BETTER, with all of them, afterward, picking up the pieces. It's short, and sharp, and she just nails the voices, all of 'em. I can hear Chip Zien and Joanna Gleason and the "bloodthirsty little motherling in a cloak of wolfskins," just, holding on to what they've still got and figuring out what they have to finally let go of. THANK YOU, COSMOS, for the best Yuletide ever.
Then I went through and read some more things, and holy CRAP some of y'all really brought it this year. Fuck, you guys are good.
The First First Time, How I Met Your Mother, dude, Ted/Barney! and so, like, old-school slash. I'm really so fond of this show, and this fic slides right in there, picks up Ted's hazy, well-meaning narration and plays with the series nonlinear structure like whoa. This is like, what we'd get if someone like
mazily were a staff writer on the series, in a parallel Nozzola world where all TV was slashy and kittens grew on trees. And it's sexy and awkward and we learn where Barney got the bulletproof game called "Have you met Ted?"
Want to Screw Up, Bones, Nonlinear and pitch-perfect and smart and sad. This is what we sign up for Yuletide for, folks. You! Person! Write more Bones fic? Dammit! This is beautiful.
Let's Do Some Living After We Die, Beautiful Girls, Willie and Marty. Ouch. It's like watching Closer. Hell, it's like watching Beautiful Girls, back when there was something about Natalie Portman that sent us all just a little bit to jail.
Innocent as a Rose, The Sound of Music, Liesl. When the Von Trapp family moved to Vermont, Liesl was probably eighteen going on nineteen, awkward with lingering Austrian stodginess in the American 40s. The author here just cuts right to the heart of it, Liesl's innocence versus everything she's seen, her love and her frustration, her inexperience, the ephemeral idea of love and everything she left behind. This is a killer piece of work.
Billy Brennan, Prince of Humbugs, Jurassic Park III, Alan/Billy, I am thrilled, thrilled to BITS. This is just, absurdly satisfying, with DINOSAURS and ARCHAEOLOGY and, you know, bones and shit. And Billy walking that fine, seductive line between jaded and cynical and dumbstruck with wonder at all those dinos and Alan's big brain. This is sexy fun, plus PLOT, plus strategically placed ELLIE, plus a really resonant Billypov. Word.
more later, I gotta make ready for
wearemany. But, aw, man, thanks again, yuletide elves.
