Here's a youtube link to the last three minutes of Diane's last episode of Cheers, the famed "have a good life" and then the fantasy flashforward and I am, you will, many of you, be astonished to observe, am so well medicated that I didn't cry, neither when I went through the first five seasons this summer nor when I watched 'em again last month. But I can't watch this youtube clip, nonetheless.

God DAMN that's good TV, people.

Now. Can someone tell me what the music is that plays under that last dance? Doo do do doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo. Doo doo, doo do do doo, doo do do dooo. I've been singing it in my head, in my house and in the shower, to [livejournal.com profile] wearemany and my webcam, over and over for half a year now and I'm ready to put a name to it if I can. Yes?

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jood and [livejournal.com profile] txvoodoo I can report it's Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do," and here's an absolutely knockout version by Rufus, Martha and Loudon Wainwright: What'll I Do?.

"What'll I Do", by Irving Berlin. I think Sinatra is the version most people know.

Alison Krauss is yummy at it, but sadly I can only hear Mary Steenburgen in my head. (from The Butcher's Wife)

P.S. Hi!

duh, lyrics help...

Gone is the romance that was so divine.
tis broken and cannot be mended.
You must go your way,
And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...

What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do?

What'll I do?
When I am wondring who
Is kissing you
What'll I do?

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When Im alone
With only dreams of you
That wont come true
What'll I do?

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When Im alone
With only dreams of you
That wont come true
What'll I do?

I got a chill through my chest just reading the lyrics. I THOUGHT it was some early American composer, I was trying to find Gershwin in my head! Or, you know, Greensleeves. *g*

God, that song, that scene, that can kill a person. Thanks.

PS. Hi back!

I'm pretty sure that the song is "What Would I Do" or "What Should I Do" and that it's from the 20s or 30s - my grandmother used to sing it a lot, and she would have turned 105 this year.

Thanks! Now if I can only find a version to download! Limewire is foresaking me, though there appears to be a Nat King Cole version that looks good...

Hehe - I can DISTINCTLY hear my grandmom toodling it as she would knead her pasta dough - that and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" -

Be sure it's true when you say
"I love you"
It's a sin to tell a lie
Millions of hearts have been broken
Just because these words were spoken

I love you
Yes I do
I love you
If you break my heart I'll die
So be sure that it's true when you say
"I love you"
It'a sin to tell a lie

She would sing it with that 30s crooner warbly inflection, too :D

You know how that starts, right?

Took a little girl out on a date last night,
Next to her Greta Gerty would have looked all right.
Now I'm between the devil and the deep blue sea, cause I said "Baby you look good to me."
I told her I loved her, but oh, how I lied, and now she's getting set to be my blushing bride.
If she leads me to the altar, I'm sunk cause I can’t tell the preacher I was drunk.
So God have mercy on a "no account sinner,"
Give me one more chance to let another guy win her.
Cross my heart and hope to die, I'll never, never, never, tell one more time,
I'll never tell another white lie, do do di do do.

My dad used to sing this one all the time. Still does, actually. *g* Ah, that brings me back.

Ahhhh grandmom never sang that part!!! That's awesome.

Now I'm thinking back to all the old movies we'd watch - she adored Ruby Keeler and all the old "Broadway Melody" movies and knew every song by heart. I have a sneaking suspicion that my little old Sicilian granny may have harbored showbiz aspirations when she was young ;)

I love that version of that song. It's from a Kate and Anna McGarrigle "and family" album (The McGarrigle Hour), so Rufus, Martha, and Loudon are on quite a few songs, along with various other friends. It's wonderful.

Cheers
