I'm just saying, if you're an intergalactic time traveler with a sonic screwdriver that tends to go on the blink, the absolute best accessory you can have is a doctor. Or at least a med student. Also, if you're Sab, and you love your show like a fat kid loves cake, the absolute best accessory you can add to said tee vee show is a doctor. Or at least a med student. That's essentially what I've got to report. I mean, let's talk about Martha listening to both hearts and offering stomach cramps as a diagnosis. Let's talk about CPR on two hearts, whydoncha! Not to mention a kiss of life that can now, and just as easily, go both ways. Which is the punch line.
With Rose at his side, there was room for all sorts of marvelous adventure, a sort of you-and-me against the backdrop of the wonders of the universe, right? But with Martha at his side I feel the Doctor's actually got a fighting chance of winning some serious space wars and fighting some serious epic enemies! No tossing this girl into a parallel universe for safekeeping, you know? No worrying about bringing her home to mom on time; this girl pays rent and has exams to worry about.
"Smith and Jones" was at least as satisfying as "The Runaway Bride," which heretofore had impressed my tiny socks off. I mean, dude, we got TOES! We got ten little Gallifreyan toes and some radioactive Chucks tossed in the hazmat bin! We got OH MY GOD the scruffy hair, and oh my god that look, outside the party, when he rolls around the corner with that "meet me for a quickie and I'll make you see stars" look on his face, and I'm even a champion of the blue suit today.
The Judoon were a terrific addition andfmangel and I want to see the tribe of rhino space cops MORE, because all in all I get this feeling like we're gearing up for the Shadow War or the Third Age of Mankind or the Changeling Occupation or...whatever it is on a space show when your heroes have their backs against the wall and have to fight for Good over Evil for the fate of the entire universe, uncelebrated and risking their very lives. Of course, what we're going to get are cat people and Shakespeare and Captain Jack, but the tenor of the battles -- at least based on 3x01 -- feel so much more significant than they did back when it was Rose fighting mannequins in the basement. Because if the battle's not important, or at least exciting, or vital to the salvation of the human race, you get the feeling Martha's just gonna pop home and go out with her mates and study for her exams instead.
MY SPACE BOYFRIEND'S BACK, people! And I have been waiting for that cheap trick let me pop into the past and show you my necktie trick to win a pretty girl's heart (hell, if I was a time traveler, it's what *I'd* do), and -- yeah. I am all for the romance and I am all for Martha Jones, the first one to give the Doctor a name because she's the Doctor, and after her exams he'll just be some bloke named Smith that she's got to give CPR to on occasion and fight beside for all space and time.
Pompous time lord indeed. I'd re-add "the egos of doctors" to my interests list if it weren't already there. Go team Doctors, Smith and Jones!

I know already that this unrequited-love business is bad news bears for me and my sanity.
