Dear Sarah Jane Adventures,

If every episode is half of a two parter, what you've got here is not, in fact, a half-hour show, but rather an hour show spread across two weeks.

Hmm? Hm? Yeah.

And let's not forget that back in the great early 90s, Doogie Howser, MD was a half-hour DRAMA. Yay for groundbreaking gays! Nay for British shows (and, I mean, seriously, it's not like the Beeb or the CBeeb has, like, TIME BLOCKS to worry about, y'all could have an hour-and-ten-minute show if you wanted, or a forty-minute, seriously, let's not pretend you're trying to cram into NBC primetime or summat) that won't gimme all their content in one go!

Love,
ME

See, you've said this twice, and I have to admit that I never thougth of Doogie as a drama. Dramedy, at the most. (I did love it, either way, at least for a while. Except that no WAY could Doogie & Vinnie be lifelong friends when Vinnie is clearly from New Yawk.)

It's not really funny enough to warrant the -edy.

But SEE. This is what I'm saying! DH, MD: NOT funny. In fact, so thick with Very Special Episodes it could nearly be considered an Afterschool Special. No laugh track, single camera (obv), etc, etc, but ALSO, not funny. And not just incidentally this-show-is-dated we're-too-earnest-to-be-ironic not funny, I mean, ACTUALLY not funny, purposely not funny. A DRAMA.

Oh, Doog! I love you so much, even though you're not funny. Where's my NPH icon at?!

But not funny! Not even built to be funny! No jokes! Just earnestness and Serious Issues!

On the other hand, dude. No WAY did Vinnie grow up in Brentwood. JERSEY, maybe...

My plan with Sarah Jane Adventures is not to watch them until at least half the season is out, and then watch all the parters together, b/c you're totally right, it's ridiculous.

That's what the traditional Who format was pre-2005, although most of the stories were four to six episodes long.
