I don't know that his filming in America would change his level of fame at all - unless the specials were actual movie-theatre movies or something, or they sold them to a different TV network than the show is on right now. If they are shown on SciFi or BBCA, I don't think it would change his level of fame appreciably. Especially SciFi - they're terrible at promoting the show as it is.
And if getting him away from crazy British fans would lengthen his Dr. Who tenure, I say we roll out the welcome mat! I'll buy him dinner.
