I dreamed I was heading up a very long escalator; it went from hell up to Philadelphia. I was behind a chick with a backpack, and there were papers poking out, notes for her Yuletide fic, which turned out to be for me. (It was [livejournal.com profile] glossing), writing me something based on the Betsy-Tacy books, and even then on the escalator I was surprised that she didn't choose the Love & Rockets prompt.

I've been fantasizing about my Yuletide fic; not the one I'm writing but the one some nice person is writing for me! and what it might be like. This year I picked four prompts I'm quite interested in, but here between you and me and the escalator to hell I'm thinking, at least today, that I'd really really like it if someone did the UTEOTW prompt.

This desire brought to you by the fact that I watched a couple episodes of Supernatural last night (update: still like the MOTWs, but wish the boys were Mulder and Scully instead) and they have all their angels, which reminded me of Wings of Desire and Faraway, So Close, featuring the two angels Damiel and Cassiel and it occurred to me that those films and SPN would be RIPE for a crossover.

And then my mind went to other Wim Wenders' I love, namely, Until the End of the World, which is, as many people who know me know, my most favoritest movie ever (next to Starship Troopers).

...actually, backing out slightly more, any die-hard Wenders fans among you? Favorite films? Favorite people? Favorite Philip Winter? (mine is the one from UTEOTW but followed incredibly closely by the one in Alice in the Cities, and then the one from Lisbon Story)

Anyone else seen the extended 7 hour cut of OTEOTW?

Anyone out there making progress on their [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic?

Anyone feel like adding some notable stories to my fanlore entry? *g*

Anyone seen Punk?

serendipitous - or not so random, since the recent SPN ep is the one that made the clearest Wenders impression - I watched the latest SPN today and also was prompted to recall Peter Falk's angel and his long observation of humans on Earth; I felt seriously stupid to never have before today noticed the copycat trench-coat wearing Castiel (Misha, so seriously gorgeous, goddamn).

I count myself as a die-hard Wenders fan (oops), though I admit I haven't seen his latest in a few years (I have even managed to miss Faraway, So Close... I also did not see The end of Violence, though I saw Lisbon Story and Million Dollar Hotel. I have NOT seen the extended cut of Bis Ans Ende der Welt, and would OMG LOVE TO).

My favorite Wenders is The State of Things, really, Der Stand der Dinge, L'Etat des choses. For some reason I never really think of this movie without thinking of those three titles. And the one sheet. The tag line is superb, too: They didn't want to kill him, they just wanted a story. Patrick Bauchau forever remains a big love of mine, and all because of his work with Wenders.

I remember loving Faux Mouvement (False Movement / The Wrong Move) a lot, and the one about Nick Ray with the slow boat to China at the end. My favorite Winter is probably Alice, even with all my love for ... what's your acronym, god, UTEOTW? right. I should learn to type that, it is quicker than the German title I always think of.

I used to say, as a pompous film student, that Wenders often missed some of what he was going for, but that his failures were the most interesting thing about his cinema - or at least, that his failures were more interesting and valuable than most of other filmmakers' successes. I still believe that. And he gave me access to Hanke...

sry for repost, but missing words + typos were too much to sit idly. :)

Faraway, So Close is strangely indulgent and not impressively good. It's sort of a Mary Sue for Cassiel, (Damiel is dead and the acrobat is alone) who does, like Spider-Man moves to help... destroy a nuclear power plant? Something. A poor choice, anyway.

I think of it as bis ans end der welt too, though the poster I have has the English and French titles, jusqu' du fin de monde (did I spell that right?).

Wenders came and screened the 7-hour cut of UTEOTW at the American Film Institute several years back, and then stuck around for questions.

I asked him why he kept naming Rudiger Vogler's characters Philip Winter, when they were clearly not the same Philip Winters. "It's a good name," he said.

"It's a good name," he said. NAW!

In French: Jusqu'à la fin du monde. :)

Now you made me want to dig in my DVDs.. I'm not even sure I have them! Time to make a wishlist.

UTEOTW is NOT and will probably never BE out in region 1 DVD. I do however think there's a region 4 ver. out there and a region 2 -- I used to own one of those but I can't remember which region; I got it at my fave multiregion DVD seller and played it with my multiregion drive.

It is WORTH FINDING. It has the full director's cut! It is also SRSLY pretty.

Now *I* want to watch Wings of Desire. OH Peter Falk. "I can't see you, but I know you're there."

I'm feeling angry and stressed out. Maybe I'll log back onto LJ Talk after I take a shower and/or pill. I still feel like I might write today!

I know exactly what I'm going to write, after coming up with something I'm not ashamed to describe as quite brilliant because it was the product of a joint brainstorming session with a friend. I just need to take the time to sit down and get started, possibly after I review a few things to get a better idea of a supporting character's voice. I have never been this together with a Yuletide story, so I'm feeling pleased. For once.

Oh, I'm jealous! I don't have my head wrapped around my story well enough yet to call it brilliant; at this point it's just (maybe) load-bearing.

But the more time I spend with the source material the more little things I think I can pick up and steal...

I feel pompous bragging, but seriously, I got a left-field pairing which I managed to get a bead on after reading the recipient's letter and seeing what floats her boat. This year, I'm trying really hard to focus on pleasing that person, rather than the general audience of readers, so that's why I'm excited.

But I have no idea what to add to your Fanlore entry! Woeangsttragedy.

I keep gathering brilliant ideas for the Yuletide story I'm writing, but have yet to write a word, or rewatch any canon.

I saw "Until The End of the World" on an awkward date in college (the other movie I saw on a date with the same guy was "Cruel Intentions", and that was a first date, so talk about awkward). Mostly what I remember is the "got your man" bear, and the satellite falling in Australia (or is that from something else)?

Re: Yuletide I have just over 4,000 words on my story, but the draft, she is very, very rough. But I sort of know what I'm doing, so I have hope.
From: [identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com
That's the one, though they're in Australia while the satellite explodes... in space. But more importantly, the Bounty Bear is def one of the funniest and most memorable bits in that movie. Searching... Searching... Give me a minute....

What a long and complicated movie to see on a date! Even the regular cinema cut is over 3 hours long.
