At this point there still aren't any interviews testifying to the theory that David and Gillian consciously made M&S turn the corner. But most of the people I know who have rewatched the series recently have come to the same conclusion. Especially with Chris Carter still blaring about "respect" at the time, it's hard to think he was behind it.

BUT, "all things" is accepted as the closest thing to official notice - at the time - since Gillian says in her commentary that the producers (I think she mentions Spotnitz by name) came to her and told her that she should put in a little implication that they spent the night together (since they were planning for the end-of-season pregnancy surprise).

Now, Chris and Frank both talk like it's established canon that M&S had sex in the end half of season seven, but since it wasn't in the scripts and they also say they kept everything deliberately ambiguous, I don't know who else we can blame except Duchovny and Anderson! (And they claim that after six years they didn't even remember they'd had a baby, so who knows if they remember how they interacted in season seven.)

I can't even guess as to whether it was conscious or unconscious, but I'd like someone to ask them, someday!
