when I'm sick and moany, I remember things from my childhood, like Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories and my favorite one: How Six Pigeons Came Back to Hatrack the Horse After Many Accidents and Six Telegrams

six pigeons ran away from Hatrack the Horse, and came back again. They sent telegrams first:

6. "Pity me. Far is far. Near is near. And there is no place like
home when the yellow roses climb up the ladders and sing in the early
summer. Pity me. WEDNESDAY EVENING IN THE TWILIGHT AND THE GLOAMING."

I'll get a cup of tea, and crawl back into bed now, and maybe on some channel there'll be Annie Potts.

Good god. I thought I was the only one who'd ever read those.

In second grade I'd already read everything else on the silent reading rack, and I pulled that book out from the way, way back, next to "The Jungle Book", and all the other books that were too boring for the other kids to read. They were odd, but they had nice pictures of rabbits in them. I can't remember a single thing about them.
