this is the face of internet porn!
May. 31st, 2004 12:02 pmYou know the joke, the one that gets all sorts of mileage on sitcoms and radio morning shows and whatever's replaced water-cooler conversations, the joke about how the Internet was built for porn? He says, "I swear, if you deleted all the porn from the internet there'd only be ONE website left. And it would be the BRING BACK PORN! website."
That joke? I realized -- WE are the porn on the internet! That porn they're all talking about? That's US.
I've never been so proud. *g*

Now, a question for the tech-savvy. Who can talk me through deleting Windows components?
I've got a 20 gig harddrive that shows up as a 16.7 gig harddrive, likely because of a hidden partition that I'm choosing not to worry about. So really, I have a 16.7 gig harddrive. My files, audio and video and images, all told probably total about five gig. My applications, Mozilla and OpenOffice and Photoshop and so on, probably total two gig at the outside. That's seven gig.
My harddrive is FULL. Am I to believe that Windows XP is taking up the whole TEN REMAINING GIG on my harddrive? And if so, BOY does that ever suck. (Also it begs the question of where those missing four gig [the ones that knocked my 20 gig HD down to 16.7] are, if they're not supporting the system software, but perhaps I shouldn't worry about that.)
So tell me, how do I get into Windows and delete all Bill's stuff I don't use? Like Outlook and MSN and IE? And whatever the hell else is taking up more than half my useable computer space?
Add/Remove Programs lets me browse my applications, as listed above. I don't want to delete my applications, and as I said, they only total about two gig. I want to figure out what ELSE is here that's taking up my whole goddamned ThinkPad. Please help!

Date: 2004-05-31 01:05 pm (UTC)Are you sure you don't have another folder somewhere with a lot of stuff in it? You might open up your hard drive to the main folder menu and check the properties on all of them, see how much space each one takes up. You might find something hidden off somewhere that way.
And just to check: this isn't CPU usage under the Task Mananger, is it? 'Cause that's something else entirely.

Date: 2004-05-31 01:23 pm (UTC)I regularly scare myself with this very same thought. I hear/read talk about porn on the net, and my mind conjures an image of sleazy men searching for hard core videos featuring ridiculous looking, walking silicone advertisements. And then a small voice comes and says: "what exactly is it that you read on the net?"
Oops!

Date: 2004-05-31 02:38 pm (UTC)As far as porn on the Internet, I know--it reminds me of that, Is There Pornography On Your Computer? pop-up, 'cause whenever I see that I'm always like, wait, is this a rhetorical question?

Date: 2004-05-31 05:21 pm (UTC)(Actually, I was able to fight Bill tooth and nail and I stole back THREE WHOLE GIG, but it took some fancy footwork. And this search totally helped. Thank you thank you!)

Date: 2004-06-01 09:54 am (UTC)If you haven't done so already, you should also clear out your temperary folders. There's one at C:\Documents and Settings\{yourlogonidhere}\Local Settings\Temp that a lot of people don't know about. Just shut down all your applications and you'll be fine, Windows won't let you delete anything that it's actually using.
