sab: (hopey on the road)
[personal profile] sab
Some vague shoutouts to my LJ f'list homies, because I am nothing if not a -- what's the word for what I am? (Hush, [livejournal.com profile] pene!) Anyway, a roundup.

ETA cut tags, because I am of the Cult of Nice.

You

I've learned a great deal about Singapore (and Croatia!) from both [livejournal.com profile] viggorlijah and [livejournal.com profile] deadspeaker -- Dale, meet June. June, meet Dale.

And I've long considered introducing [livejournal.com profile] _maayan and [livejournal.com profile] selenak to one another ([livejournal.com profile] kernezelda, hold my hand, this could potentially be so goddamned frightening for the bystanders), 'cause, just imagine! The character debates! The pontificating! The Euro-lefty bemusement at all of us stateside plebes! The ultimate face-off between the flyboy dork hero and the misunderstood vaguely sinister alien! Then again, what with M. firmly entrenched in SG and summertime and teetering on retirement, and S. madlessly reaching her brachiarte into the furthest corners of fandom and being, you know, a freakish superwoman who writes more a day than I *eat,* perhaps they'll just be ships that pass in the night. But still, somehow fascinating.

[livejournal.com profile] channe should post more. Channe, I don't know you at all, but I like you very much, and would quite enjoy it if you utilized your livejournal more frequently so's I could better familiarize myself with your brains. In my quest for Borg-like assimilation.

Speaking of which, and probably all the relevant parties already know this, [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge is about to take the plunge into DS9, and I feel we should enable her to the best of our enabling abilities. On the same note, [livejournal.com profile] barkley is inches from the end of B5, so 'Raste, Hobs, Se, etc, when you get a chance, hie thee over to Barkley's LJ and chime in on some of her episode reviews. When she's done she's gonna want fic, too, so, you know, stand by.

And of course I'm still doing B5 for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van; I have about...five stories left in my stable of things I put aside to rec, and I'll crank them out over the next several days, but I will gladly welcome recs from the peanut gallery too, for stuff I may have missed, as this is our ONE AND ONLY MONTH and we should make it COUNT.

Me

If you're the sort of person who needs amnesty for defriendation, consider yourself absolved -- if you've been skulking around wanting to defriend me, go for it! I'm so agreeable and I don't hold grudges and it will not affect whether or not I keep *you* friended, as my own friending policies are desperately fickle and insane. As I'm sure many of you have noticed, as I add and drop and re-add and re-drop people depending on my mood that day and the price of cabbage in China. My friends' list is like a big...BONSAI, that I just keep snipping at and pruning and reshaping. It's like a zen GARDEN of friends that wants perpetual raking. If you catch where I've drifted. (I didn't.)

In related news, if you're visiting and would like to friend me, you really don't need to ask. Just click away, do your thing, etc.

What you'll find here is, fandomwise, these days, mostly B5, Jeremiah, Band of Brothers, and Firefly. I've got my ear pressed up against Smallville and, you know, Sports Night and Buffy and Farscape and so on, too, but I do more listening than talking around those parts, these days.

Outside of fandom, you will find an underemployed professional writer living and dying in the great slum of Hollywood, with a penchant for disaster movies and movies about undersea aliens. I read books about expats and war, and sometimes books about expats in war. I've got a cat who eats birds whole, and alive, from the beak to the feet, under my desk daily.

Oh, I also make icons. I forgot I made icons. They don't suck!

Them

And some general LJ recs, in case you're in the market for new friends and I don't fill yor bill (why? WHY?!!?):

[livejournal.com profile] inapickle, as we all know, is a tiny genius and should be read by everyone. The same could be said for [livejournal.com profile] kormantic, although of late neither one of 'em is updating frequently enough for my taste.

[livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns is the go-to girl for electoral politics, also Boston-area activism and CSI.

If you're not already reading [livejournal.com profile] ginmar's LJ, you probably should be -- she's stationed in Baghdad and her reports on army life are sort of frighteningly close to home and also not at all self-pitying and very human. She's recently in the midst of a feminism debate that hasn't caught my interest (a lot of caterwauling and preaching in the comments and nothing new under the sun), but her reports from the front are sharp and insightful and enthralling.

Where in the world is [livejournal.com profile] killabeez?

In conclusion, I've made a filter for all the icon contests I submit to, so as to save clicking and back-clicking and madness. You should feel free to nab and/or bookmark this filter for yourselves. And if there's any icon contests I've left off, lemme know and I'll add 'em.

I think that might be everything I know. That's a lot! I know some things! Now I'm hungry.

Inches! Soon, it will be mine. 6 episodes to go, and it's all starting to ramp up.

I know and love [livejournal.com profile] _mayaan's Farscape stories already, but though I saw three or four episodes, the SG bug never caught on with me... Otoh, I hear she's discovered Firefly?

From: [identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com
She has, and though she doesn't intend to write fic for Firefly, being Maayan, I cannot imagine she would shy away from discussion or debate. She's also got Buffy/Angel history. And is easily provoked.

(Trying to provoke her now.) *g*

I'm bridging the gap between them! C'mon, everyone, Hands Across Sab!

Or, at least, I would be bridging the gap, if I weren't doubled over in laughter at Maayan being "shy."

No, no, really. I'll be okay. Really. Breathe.

(And Kerne, your icon is oddly PERFECT. I think Maayan's Grayza and Selena's Natira, don't you?)

Liar! Liar! Pants on FIRE!

And G'Kar will really, really respond soon. We're chewing!

'Twas created by the talented [livejournal.com profile] jess79, and don't we all?

Speaking of Hands Across Sab, and Sab and hands, the urge is strong to lend her one in order to save her from the state of Dubya. Could we not import and share her between France and Germany, in the spirit of post-war French-German cooperation?

Date: 2004-06-19 02:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] -maayan.livejournal.com
Jess is talented indeed.

I am more in a "Let's go over there and take Dubya out," frame of mind, but until such time as I've worked out all the logistics, yes, we could time-share Sab.

Let's not get the EU involved, though. The paperwork would be a killer.

From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
I'd be all for taking Dubya out were it not for the fact that this would make Cheney the Vile President. I can't remember the last time I was so anxious about American elections...

I've been meaning to ask - would John and Scorpius in "Kansas" (your story, not the episode) have been gallivanting about in a post-9/11 America, or was the story written before the Patriot Act?

On Se's superwoman-hood:

From: [identity profile] hobsonphile.livejournal.com
Seriously! I don't know how she does it. Honestly, if I were driving the van for B5, I'd rec all of Se's stories and point everyone to [livejournal.com profile] londo_mollari too. To hell with the rules. She is Centauri- she understands the characters (especially Londo), she understands the culture and she brings the whole bloody race to life in a manner that intimidates the hell out of me.

But if you were to put a gun to my head and force me to pick one, I would have to choose Not in Words out of pure obligation. My [livejournal.com profile] timov_of_algul owes everything to that story.

But I'm also partial to her first, Truth or Dare, or the heartbreakingly sweet Miracles, which pings my Londo&Vir button in a HUGE way, or her more recent one or... AIEE! Do you see why this is so hard? *g*

I look at Se and I look at you and I look at [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite and I grow ever more convinced with every passing day that I am the weak link in our band of sisters.

Aw. Thanks. *g* But I know what my weaknesses are. I'm bad at plot and I can't do funny to save my life. Seriously, everytime I've started off writing something funny for Vir, it always ends up being sad in the end. *sigh*

"Truth or Dare" is already on my list, along with your Vir 5 Things.

The question is: where's the good B5 fic outside folks we know? I feel like it must be skulking around on the Internet somewhere, but all the old-school stuff I used to enjoy back in the day has disappeared from the internet (where's all the Sinclair/Garibaldi gone?!), and the new-school stuff is basically...us. *g*

As for old-school stuff, have you asked [livejournal.com profile] leyenn? She knows a lot of folks in B5 fandom outside of the sisterhood. ;)

I'm going to go with "polymorph." Because you are exasperatingly everywhere and nowhere and always coming apart at the edges and at the center too and creeping into every crevice where a mite of genius might wish to hide.

And you should really put me on your friends list if you are going to have those friends-only entries with the hot little chastity belt locks on them because I want to know what's going on in your head every second. Because your brain is better than a vacation. Otherwise I don't care, so there.
