I actually do remember the thread on ASCEM that the definition came from, and I vaguely even remember defining that word. But '98 was so long ago! How was I supposed to remember these important details? How, I ask you!?

I am not sure if this is true. As much as I'd love it to be Sab, I get the feeling that "fanon" has been around longer than that. I'll do some research on it, and maybe I'm misremembering, but I seem to recall the word from like, the late '80s. But heck, I could totally be wrong, too.

while it's neat to be able to track down who coined a term, the fannish hive mind often makes that impossible; i wouldn't even be surprised at independent separate coinage in terms like that...

Yeah, I mean, of course I didn't actually invent this word. If nothing else, it's such an easy slushing together of words -- fan + canon -- that other folks probably stumbled across it just out of laziness, throughout the history of fans rewriting source material -- aka, since cave painting days.

But what is important here is that the INTERNET thinks *I* invented FANON! Thus making me SUPER FAMOUS! Kiss my staff! Me and Al Gore in '08!
