Question:

What file format does iPod video support? .avi? .mpeg? Something new? The Zune plays back .wmvs only, but on the other hand, .wmvs are easy to make and use on a PC.

Um, I lost my iPod mini, and am now ready to graduate to a giggier player that also plays me movies. Despite allegiances to the contrary, I'm also kind of impressed by the Zune. And let's not forget, I'm on a PC.

But let's talk VIDEO files, eh?

Also, what's the size ratio? If a one-hour ep of TV is 349MB in .avi, that's three to a gig. How does that transfer on an ipod? .wmvs tend to be smaller than .avis, so I could probably get at least three hours of TV per gig on a Zune. What's the story on an iPod video?

Love,
And don't forget to brine your turkeys,

Sab

Actually, a lot of the downloading places offer episodes in ipod-size, which seems to be smaller, about 180 to 230 mb for an hour episode. (45 minutes)

A friend of mine dragged an Archos Gmini all over Iraq (so you know it's durable) and he raved about it. From what I've heard, it really gives the Ipod a run for its money when it comes to video, so I recommend checking it out.

Oh, thank you, this is awesome. The Archos 604 looks FANTASTIC, now I'm investigating its competitors. The Cowon A2 is positively droolworthy. Acrhos has a bunch of devices that all look damned cool, however...

That was so helpful, thanks! It looks like it will be a cool player in about two or three generations, but I'm not enough of an early adopter to need Zune mk. 1 with all its bugginess...

iTunes Store uses the MPEG 4 video format, file extension .m4v. But you may be able to put other videos on your iPod, I just haven't tried. The tv episode I bought from the store is 212 MB.

I think you generally need to get a program that will convert the .avi (etc) files to .m4v. DivX has such a program and there are a few others around.

There are third-party apps that let you turn your existing video iPod friendly. Check download.com.

Don't get a Zune: the wireless functionality is intentionally crippled, and it's way too big anyhow. Buy an iPod off CraigsList.

Yeah, I'm so not getting a Zune. I am so getting an all-frills DVR substitute camera/video player/wireless device like a real live power nerd.

as shaye said, i think it has to be in .w4v - that's everything i've gotten from the store. but there's this genius website, www.ipodnova.net, that lets you download everything in ipod format. except i think there's like, a wait time for new episodes, and you have to register, but it's free. i have a pc, too, (pc's rock!) and there hasn't been a problem at all. i don't know how much space they take up, i have a 30 gig, and i have 7 episodes of heroes (yeah, i'm way behind on that show), 4 of bsg, and 1 gg, and that's 3.79 gigs.

I LOVE IT. IT IS BEAUTIFUL.

(also, our turkey is brining as we speak.)

I actually just bought a (video) Zen Creative and I'm v.v. happy with it. I was having some software issues, but I found a free converter here (I think it also converts to mp4 aka ipod playable format).
