Viva Laughlin was surprisingly, remarkably loyal to Blackpool. Which means that I happened to unexpectedly LOVE the pilot, and also that there is no way it will last on this side of the pond. Even Blackpool probably couldn't sustain a full series or even a full season, and I'll be surprised if Viva Laughlin even survives the six episodes of the Blackpool miniseries. I mean. It's a serious crime drama series peppered with musical numbers wherein the actors sing along to recorded pop music. Also there's dancing.
The actors clearly watched Blackpool and did their damndest to mimic the British actors: Lloyd Owen does a note-perfect David Morrissey, and Madchen Amick does a pretty good Sarah Parish. But I'll tell you, cats and kittens, Eric Winter is no David Tennant as DI Peter Carlisle (or Detective Peter Carlyle, over here). He does snack on some things, which is satisfying, and we didn't get to hear him sing in this episode so I'm going to give him the chance to be awesome at that, but overall...it's the difference between a brilliant, comedic Shakespearean actor and...some guy who was on Days of our Lives. So, you know.
Man, I hope they use some of Blackpool's music later on; it would be a TRAGEDY to have no "These Boots Were Made For Walking."
