Northern Exposure, also the X-Files. NX, you want to watch the first four and a half seasons, all in a row. You can stop after Joel leaves. XF, go back and restart at the beginning and watch through season 6.

Also Dexter and Big Love. Big Love has Grace Zabriskie holding a chicken, and Dexter has people periodically in boxes full of blood.

This new sitcom, "Big Bang Theory" is showing some promise, and has the we-need-to-change-the-world motivation behind the awkward-men-and-women-being-dorky-and-not-knowing-how-to-relate humor, not unlike SN.

30 Rock is the love child of Sports Night and Arrested Development, so if for some reason you haven't seen either of those shows in their entirety, you should do that.

And I recommend The Comeback, with Lisa Kudrow. Ugly duckling stumbling, awkward and hilarious assistants, workplace hijinks.

If you like Stephen Fry: Absolute Power (I think you'd really like Absolute Power, actually, even if you don't particularly like Stephen Fry; I give it my highest recommendation) and QI.

As far as new stuff goes, Fairy Tales is not as bad as I was expecting it to be, but the episodes are all stand-alones (and there are only three so far; and of those, I've only watched the second and the third), so it doesn't feel like a real series. I don't remember if you've mentioned watching it, but Life starts out pretty good, and gets better as it goes along. The main point of attraction is Damian Lewis, and the writing for his character.

NCIS, baby. It's like the Boston Legal of forensics shows, it's rich with boyslash, it's compulsively watchable, funny, and with a great cast of characters who work together awesomely as a team, and who grow and change over the course of the series. Start with S3 if you want to catch up fast, otherwise go back and start at the beginning so you get to meet Kate, not just Ziva.

And of course Buffy, if for some reason you haven't seen it. Watch through season 6.

You know, I vaguely remember that show. I remember that in my early feminist days it pissed me off because Hope had a baby and didn't want to go back to work. Uh - I'm less insensitive now. I remember it was good though. It was unlike anything else on TV at the time.

Yeah, it had a problem toward glorifying breeders/housewives/whatever, but I think it ultimately shot itself in the foot, because the character most universally beloved is Melissa, and she's the only one not married off at the end of the series.

There is some horrible forward retconning about it, however; Gary's ghost shows up at Ellyn's wedding and whispers to Michael: "Don't worry about Melissa. She marries Lee and they have a great kid." Which in one way -- because Melissa really, really wanted a kid, and for an arc considered becoming a single mom, and that storyline never resolved so it was nice to hear that Melissa had a kid -- was kind of excusable -- but it would have been better if it had just been "she has a great kid," and left out all that heteronormativity, blah.

Still, it's unlike anything that was on TV at its time. You should download.
