Date: 2002-04-19 07:33 pm (UTC)huh. Not on my top list, but a dang good collection. "Sweatheart of the Song Tra Bong" is, I think, my favorite. "Rainy River" is also good.
There was a sf story set in the same period - a man who had to know the names of all the trees and bushes...I wish I could remember the name of it.

The Healer's War is another one I enjoyed - it's Elizabeth Scarbrough's first, and, IMO, best work. Thick, though.
A shorter story, if you can find it (Women in Fantasy I think) is Gail Baidino's 'Bitterfoot'. "No magic," the editor of the anthology said, 'except that of a gifted story-teller."
I've heard of the Caputo book - have not read it. Thanks for the rec.
