goddamn it, internet, let me inside you!
Nov. 30th, 2005 05:54 pmWHAT happened to the "Hungry and the Hunted" baby animals/"Hymn to Her" montage on the Sports Night DVDs? There was, I SWEAR, a baby animals montage, with polar bears and lions and so forth! While Jeremy is on the phone to his dad! And this is NOT showing on my DVD and I am --
gamesiplay can testify -- bereft! Furious!
Here's what happens. We fade out on Jeremy on the phone, but the song keeps playing, and under the credits, rather than the theme song, we get the BABY ANIMALS montage, with some sort of big cats, and bears, and maybe a reindeer, babies and mama animals, and we get the WHOLE song of "Hymn to Her" under the credits!
This does not happen on the DVD. Wiki doesn't remember either.
WHERE DID THE BABY ANIMALS GO?????
PUNK doesn't remember! She says:
[18:02] an onion girl: I swear, I swear on all that is holy, that there was a baby animals montage.
[18:02] runpunkrun: I think you hit your head is what happened.
[18:03] an onion girl: NO!
[18:03] an onion girl: There was -- are you tellling me you don't remember a baby animals montage???
[18:03] runpunkrun: I do not.
[18:04] runpunkrun: It wasn't in my aired version.
[18:04] runpunkrun: I probably still have the tape around here somewhere.
HELEN doesn't remember! She says:
[18:03] hhhelen8: there was, now that you mention it.
[18:03] hhhelen8: I think you're right.
[18:03] hhhelen8: maybe they couldn't get the rights?
[18:03] an onion girl: Dear god, please say you remember it.
[18:03] an onion girl: /flailing
[18:04] an onion girl: Punk doesn't remember it!
[18:05] hhhelen8: I feel I do!

Oh, you, someone, anyone??? Please, if you can help me, if you remember this or, even better, have EVIDENCE, or, even better, HAVE the baby animals montage in some sort of digital form, I'll trade you an ACTUAL baby animal of your choice. Choose from a selection of penguins, giraffes and gerbils!

Date: 2005-12-01 03:38 am (UTC)Plus, the tape wasn't too hard to find. No montage, no baby animals (this is taped from the second time through on Comedy Central, I think). But I found evidence that they did cut something! The end fades straight to the Imagine thingy, rather than the usual Sports Night logo first (and, yes, I did watch the end of The Apology to check against it. In the name of research. And for the fluffy baby animals.)
So, paragraph of paper? I'm writing on subject access to images, but you're free to improvise on related themes :).

Date: 2005-12-01 04:32 am (UTC)Let's say, hypothetically, there were a Canadian actor named David Hewlett who was hired to play a loudmouthed civilian genius at the mercy of a bastardized military command structure in space. The portrayal of such a character conceit requires visual and psychological references to any of a set of traditional archetypes, but this is an example of a situation where an ability to index and catalog images by of-ness or about-ness offers a wider range of cross-genre inspiration. For example, a keyword search of the term "space physicist" might only return images of individuals, while a broader, more holistic approach to indexing might return a broader set of images more tangentially related to the of-ness of space physics, ie, set pieces that show labs, nontraditional equipment, nontraditional vistas, and suggestions for additional business, props and set pieces related to the broader and more detailed universe that might surround a physicist in space. Simply put: without an ability to receive a broader set of returns on a search term, we might never know that a space physicist working in a pseudo-military hierarchy requires not only knowledge related to science and technology, but also a physical body type better suited for any of a set of off-world and alien experiences available to, and necessary for, such a space mission. And without that set of returns, we, the viewers, would be denied the glory of watching a young Canadian actor named David Hewlett represent both the scientific genius and the crusade toward physical tone, ability to look good shirtless, and ability to lift heavy things necessary for a doctor of physics in space.
I think I sorta went off the rails there, at the end. And, um, the beginning.

Date: 2005-12-01 05:22 am (UTC)Now, if only we had a search index where one could look for "baby animal musical montage" and generate the entire set of musical montages starring baby animals throughout ALL TIME.
I can't BELIEVE it's not on the Comedy Central airing! My ONLY hope is the ABC airing, or else I am more crazy than I ever thought I'd be, because THAT'S how vividly I remember, not just the montage, but the year of fandom wherein I rewound and watched it a LOT.

Date: 2005-12-01 05:58 am (UTC)And, you know, I think there are enough librarian-types in fandom that such an index will, sooner or later, exist. Hmm...I wonder if I could get some sort of independent-study credit...
