So I have a whole stack of fun things to talk about as far as remixing, [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08, [livejournal.com profile] remixthedrabble, and the awesome folks who came by the remixfreakingredux AIM chat for cheering, confusion, venting, puzzling through, betaing, and in general discussing the finer points of remixing as a sport. I'd check you all by name but since the remixes haven't been revealed yet I figure there's always the possibility of letting something confidential leak: though at the moment I can't think what that would be in this case.

But, anyway. I'm going to talk about these things later in April, when the Remix Redux remixes go up.

TODAY, I am going to point out that [livejournal.com profile] remixthedrabble has gone live, and somehow I won the Awesome lottery and got 3 of my stories remixed.

FIRST, in M*A*S*H fandom, I got His Hands (Returning Remix), a remix of my drabble Hands, that took the snapshot I'd written and set it in heartbreaking context. Because there really is something special about BJ and Peg.

THEN, in my old Star Trek stomping grounds, I got Today Is Yesterday (Future Past Remix), which remixed my longish Kira/Dukat story Dislocation, Condemnation, Revelation, In Temptation into 100 perfect words. If you want to see the magic of drabble-remixing in top form, read these 100 words; they say it all.

And FINALLY, someone wrote Threads (The Backstitch in Time Remix), which took my Doctor Who story Savile Row, a story mostly about a pocket, and brought the Whoverse mythology, time travel and Martha, and made it actually about something real. Nice remixing, person. Brilliant job.

I love this season, I do.

trade ya?

In jPod, Cowboy is talking to Alistair, a video game programmer who was in isolation since a video game he designed in 2001 was based on a flight simulator that had jet planes crashing into buildings. Naturally in 2001 they pulled the game, and brought in Allistair, who's been in detention ever since.

They let him out years later, and he's talking to Cowboy, jPod's current programmer. Allistair asks something like, "what's the world been like, since 9/11?"

Cowboy says, "well, there's a perpetual sense of fear that we never had before, combined with the sudden realization that nobody's really in charge."

And I think there's an interesting part of that that's true. I have this suspicion -- particularly since that attack on the United States came quite close to the beginning of this millennium -- that we all sort of feel like we're living on borrowed time. 2008? 2010? These aren't real years -- we can't possibly be living here, in the future.

It's like we got to the end of Civ III and all our ships went out into space. Scary, no?

It's the parenthetical in that last sentence that does it, natch.

BREAKING NEWS:
DOCTOR WHO - TENNANT 'ALMOST DIED' AFTER OP

DOCTOR WHO actor DAVID TENNANT was almost exterminated in real life - after a deadly bout of appendicitis.
The British actor needed emergency surgery on a burst appendix - and almost died after the operation.
Tennant's friend tells British newspaper the Daily Mirror, "It was touch and go and it was feared he might not make it." The 36-year-old - who was nine at the time of the operation - was hospitalised for two weeks.

My remix: 2900 words and counting. I'm shooting for midday tomorrow (my time, for svv of "midday," natch) to get it off to MY MARVELOUS BETA WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS UNTIL THE REVEAL and make her fix me. And what's more? I like this story. I do, I do. I hope my remixee likes it too, I do, I do, I do.

Also, the folks who came by the remix chat the past few days have been such a blessing, and I'll tell ya, it makes plot-figure-outing so much better with a captive audience to lob non-spoiler-specific questions at. Thank you, all of you! And anyone else who wants to come visit remixfreakingredux tomorrow, you can hop yourself in any time; people drop by round the clock whenever the room's open.

Now, I've got The Office, Scrubs, 30 Rock, and NCIS all lined up for me, which means it's definitely bedtime.

Hey, SO.

If you're doing the remix this year, or even if you're not doing the remix this year, or if you've already turned in your remix, or if you're a remix beta, or if you're just a general giver-backer to fandom...

I'm keeping open AIM chatroom remixfreakingredux for people finishing their stories, looking for moral support, looking for betas, or simply looking for a place to spitball questions and get help with roadblocks. If you want in, come on AIM and go to Actions >> Buddy Chat and invite yourself (in the invite field) to chat room remixfreakingredux and you should be in like Flynn. Otherwise, ping me at an onion girl and I'll invite you.

God willing and the creek don' rise, there should be a bunch of us needing betas tonight and/or doing our post-beta rewrites tonight and having questions -- if you've got some time to volunteer for a fannish cause, consider popping in and, you know, just hanging? Or betaing? Or...and so on? And do feel free to invite your remixing and non-remixing and beta-friendly friends.

[livejournal.com profile] remixredux08's deadline is Saturday, and this year, like every year, promises to be a terrific selection of craftily rewritten and reworked prose, showcasing the awesome talents of ficwriters across the land. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] musesfool who works her arse off to make this possible for us every year!
sab: (s >> dr. dorian and his magic rewind sti)
If you're out there, working on your remix, gesticulating and weeping and getting drunker by the minute -- come join us in an old-skool AIM chatroom called "remixfreakingredux" on the AIM part of the internet?

You can go to Actions >> Buddy Chat and invite yourself, by putting your own name in the invite box and the room name in the room box. OR, ping me at "an onion girl" and I'll collect you.

Six more days? Yeah, that's right, kittens. SIX MORE DAYS. By which I meant the far more terrifying FOUR more days!
sab: (dw >> get laid on gallifrey)
Me, I'm busily finishing my Remix, and then preparing to get to work on my Sweet Charity thingy...but in between, lemme share some things:

[livejournal.com profile] moduktvdramafic, moderated by [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs, is a community for fic based on UK telly that's not about space or monsters. You know, like Spooks or Teachers or whatever. They say Green Wing counts as well! At the moment, if you've got any old fic in fandoms that count, go ahead and post it there so the comm can start getting some stories attached! Also, see it as an excuse to write me some Nina Sosanya (Jenny) - slash - that chick who played Susan - in the first season of Teachers? Alternately I would love some Book Group slash... Lachlan/Rab, anyone?

[livejournal.com profile] majoritython continues to be brought to us by [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge and [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie, and is already teeming with exciting ideas and prompts for women and people of color as elected officials (fictional or not!) so if nothing else, go read the prompts and add some?

[livejournal.com profile] amplificathon is an awesome multifandom podfic-making challenge, brought to us by [livejournal.com profile] raz0r_girl, [livejournal.com profile] anatsuno and the queen of podfic herself, [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur. I've already started recording something...why haven't you?

And the rest of this post is to say OMG x2 re: Torchwood, Exit Wounds, and OMG times a zillion for the Doctor Who premiere, "Partners in Crime." I haven't watched the BSG premiere yet, and it's probably for the best, as that double-header left me reeling and deeply, deeply in love with that whole giant Cardiff production family. Thank the lord of pants I'm writing in that 'verse for [livejournal.com profile] majoritython!

Yeah, okay, I can't keep my fat mouth shut. But there's so little in the blogosphere that I've seen in defense of Hillary and her candidacy -- I've joked that this must be what being a republican on LJ must feel like. So anyway, I can't complain about that and not do anything about it, but I will try my damndest to keep this brief and as uninflammatory as possible.

This is in response to [livejournal.com profile] txvoodoo's recent post about racism and sexism, and, before I start -- Lisa, I have nothing but the greatest respect for you, and I am all ABOUT people on LJ and everywhere expressing their opinions. What's more I'm glad that people are responding (80 comments and counting) and opening up discussion.

But anyway.

what my father calls the I-don't-know-squared problem -- I don't know what I don't know )

Um, here's some articles:

LA Times Op-Ed on Obama's speech on race
The New Republic on race in this election
Howard Dean, briefly, on the campaigns.

I very nearly got sucked into a sticky political argument-slash-Hillary-bashing that went by on my flist, but I took a deep breath and decided to do this meme I got from [livejournal.com profile] furies instead (seen recently on channel [livejournal.com profile] slodwick). I'm a lover, not a fighter, babe. *breathes*

I haven't changed these things in a coon's age, but in case anyone's always wondered what this mess was over here:

# My username is ______ because ______.

iamsab, because I AM SAB.

# My name is _____ because ______.

"after me, the deluge" for several reasons, most of which have to do with my obsessive and sometimes megalomaniacal conviction that it'll be the apocalypse that kills me. Also I tend to leave destruction in my wake. And there's that great Regina Spektor song, too.

# My journal is titled ____ because ______.

"Eating Hard Candy Alone," because if the apocalypse doesn't kill me, that's what will. It's sort of dangerous and lame at the same time; risk-taking for the hypochondriacs among us. Liz Lemon is terrified of choking to death all alone in her apartment. Guess who's got two thumbs and also has those nightmares? Yeah, that's right.

The subtitle is: "nothing says good morning like a drunken human alarm clock," which is from Scrubs's award-winning "My Screwup," and is mostly just true.

# My friends page is called ____ because ______.

"everybody wants to pass as cats," from Counting Crows "Mr. Jones," because I DO want to be a lion, and what's more, I'm pretty convinced there are times that each and every one of you'd pass as a cat if you could. I mean. EVERYBODY wants to pass as cats!

# My default userpic is ____ because ______.

This frame from the Cheers title sequence. It was such an iconic image from my childhood, this frame in particular -- actually in the later series (with Rebecca, rather than Diane) the card reads "AND George Wendt" with the "We Win!" in the background, but somehow it meant more to me to cap it from the Diane years. Still, that phrase was part of my childhood brain soup (We Win!/and George Wendt!) as pervasively as the text on the sink drain in the bathroom in the house I grew up in (CRANE: To clean, lift and turn. PATENTED.) because I read it so many times it burned itself into my little youthy brain.

During the writer's strike I changed the text in the "We Win" headline to "WGA '07!" but was finally able to return to my default default userpic when we DID win, after all.

George Wendt is Norm on Cheers (Norm!). There's no conclusive consensus on what that headline was referring to; a politician? a baseball team? World War II? but speculation goes on in Cheers communities, such as they are, around the internets and the world.

There! Got that out of my system and barely remember that political...crap. Sigh. Now the right thing to do is get back to work on my [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux08. Did I mention I love my remixee? And that for the first time I'm actually stymied as to what to remix because her stories are such lovely cohesive wholes? But I'm forging on, 'cause that's the way I roll.
sab: (torch >> sex can save your life)
Or to quote for the millionth time this review I read, which described Torchwood as "easily the best show about a bisexual time-traveller standing on various rooftops in Wales."

So, I'm re-watching the Torchwood season premiere, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which is the one with James Marsters.

(It's also important to note that I'm watching Torchwood because I had to stop watching David Tennant hosting the Friday Night Project, because it nearly KILLED me. Clearly it, like the Tennant Video Diaries, is the sort of thing I will only be able to watch in very very small increments, BECAUSE OF THE EXPLODING. His mouth! His hair! His...all wiggly and throwing his head back and laughing! Fanfic! Underpants! Although, to be fair, the actual late-night variety show part of FNP isn't really his milieu. I mean, he can give a monologue and record some sketches and wraparounds and whatever, but you just get the feeling he should be off doing Shakespeare somewhere instead OR NAKED IN MY HOUSE.)

Anyway, where was I? Oh, right.

Leadership.

*clears throat*

First, if they're trying to make John Barrowman look LESS queeny, setting him against James Marsters isn't really the best way to do that. Mostly you just watch Marsters snarl and cock his guns, and wait for Barrowman to burst into song.

under no circumstances let him kiss you! )

So I finally had to do some defriendation, kids. Some bandom and bandom-adjacent peeps, mostly because I reached the point when I couldn't STAND to see another icon with Patrick Stump or Gerard Way or, whatever, boys with eyeliner. Sorry. I'll be out at dinner when Sweet-Charity bidding closes tonight (if I did my math right?) so I'm shoving in my last bids for the fans I'm trying to buy (YAY, awesome vidders, graphic artists, and that one chick who might make me a crocheted Dalek!) and you should TOO, esp if you want to buy ME (buy me! Twist me to your bidding!), y'know, go here and buy people.

Elsewhere, I'm powering through my [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux08 thingy, and I love, love, love my remixee, so now it's just about doing her proud while also not stepping on any of the awesome she's already created, and bringing my own awesome to the remix. Fingers x'ed.

I've thrown down a whole heap of prompts for both [livejournal.com profile] boxathon and [livejournal.com profile] majoritython -- due to the abovementioned Remix and Sweet Charity I will prob only be participating in the latter, but there are SO MANY awesome prompts for the box'thon y'all should definitely go claim something you've never tried before and flex your little fannish muscles.

If I've promised to write anything else this spring I've forgotten what it is; if YOU remember you can totally tell me, but I might play dumb.

And remind me to tell you about my vivid Trazodone dream about MZ and my powerful dying love.

It's that time of day where I pimp [livejournal.com profile] majoritython, the fic for women and people of color in elected positions of power, fictional and real, in perpetuity throughout the universe! It's brought to us by the combined awesome of mods [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie and [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge, and the brainstorming and prompts threads are spiralling into awesome as we speak.

For more info, [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie wrote a post about the 'thon here.

And where's my Harriet Jones icon, dammit! Anyone seen a good one around?

Now I'm going to pimp [livejournal.com profile] majoritython, LJ's first and only ficathon devoted to women and people of color who are leaders of governments, etc, both fictional and real. From Nancy Pelosi to Teyla Emmagan, from Bill Adama to Queen Elizabeth, celebrate!

There's a really good chance I'm going to continue to pimp this for days, because, you guys, the AWESOME. Come participate. I mean, this is where the Clinton/Obama fic is going to rock out.

I'm doing Sweet Charity this year and am just sort of marveling in the awesomeness of what fans will do for each other, and for charity.

And then I was thinking I wanted to do something like buy a GIFT for someone, as well. Like, I buy a fic writer and give her an awesome request about Rodney and some chickens, and then I *give* the resulting story to Punk, as a present, because I knew it would be a fic she'd like? Doesn't that seem like a thing we could do with our fannish currency?

And then I thought, what if I buy a Sweet Charity ficcer and have her write my [livejournal.com profile] remixredux for me? Like, I give the person I auctioned for a couple of stories my remixee put up for remixing, and let HER remix one for me? I figured I'd give my remixee TWO remixes upon the reveal -- I mean, I'd write my own remix and so would the auctionee, more presents for all!

And then I thought, sometimes I have an icon that someone else wants. Let's say I "bought" it, with the common icon currency of comment/credit, over at [livejournal.com profile] grrliz icon store. Then lets say I thought [livejournal.com profile] furies would love it. So I remove it from my userpics -- or don't -- and gift it to Step.

Or, for real, what if I find an awesome piece of L Word femslash and I print it out and send it to my sister as a present? I mean, the author's information would be on it...couldn't it be like I'd bought her a book?

This strikes me as an interesting question about the creative commons nature of fanfiction, as well as offers a nice, friendly opportunity for people to use fannish infrastructure to share. I'm not sure if it's going to be universally received to look at fannish output as a product, but, as for me, I gladly put my product out there to be shared, gift-wrapped, farmed out, traded, or to serve any fannish purpose they can.

Yes? No? Oh and as for the LJ boycott, I sort of look at it the way I looked at Victoria's Secret when they discontinued my favorite bra. I mean, I was mad, I was sad, I felt a little abandoned by the people who cared for my breasts all those years, but I wasn't ideologically upset with them, and, at the end of the day, they still had several other bras that excited me, and I was still going to shop there as long as they had good soft pants and 5 bikinis for $25. So, you know, I didn't boycott them.

I'm a ho for Charity, folks! I figured if I was going shop Sweet-Charity.net this cycle it'd only be appropriate if I offered myself up for bids. We're all here, and I'm offering a broad swath of sitcom fic and other fic, so, you know, buy a sister!
